Scott Brown doesn’t have much to offer

Seriously? Another Scott Brown ad hammering Elizabeth Warren on the Native American thing? Isn’t our sitting US senator better than this? Nah.

Brown’s campaign has launched this latest TV spot amid controversy over the racist behavior of his sophomoric supporters and staff members, who mocked Warren’s claims of Native American heritage with tomahawk chops and war whoops last weekend. Classy. Rather than backing away from that behavior, Brown has rushed back toward the issue that gave rise to it.

Comments

While this ought to be a non-issue, it is obvious that declaring oneself a minority is an effort to acquire special treatment. That Warren has made this claim, in itself, has made her integrity an issue. It doesn't matter whether or not she received the special benefits, the fact that she attempted to acquire them is troubling.

Replies

Troubling somewhat. Not near troubling enough however, to vote for a Republican.

So discouraging how many people have been convinced by the Rove/Brown lies to believe that Elizabeth is a lier.

Rove technique: take your own wrong doing (lies) and claim that it is the other person who does it.

Yvonne thinks it is awful that Brown is hammering away on this issue. I think it is shameful that the Globe punditry is hammering away at Scott Brown. The cheerleaders of the Globe are so troubled by by this, that Scott Brown must be doing something right. Keep it up Scott!!

Yes, by all means keep it up Scott...and keep hoping that voters won't notice you trying to keep your Senate voting record out of sight. Perhaps you can also get a few of those "kings, queens and prime ministers" to vouch for you...whoops, that's right...that was just a lie you told and kept repeating until you were caught out on it. Seems you are perhaps not in a position to question someone else's character until you do an inside job on your own flawed ethical makeup. But keep up the attacks because in locking up the knickle-draggers' votes you are turning off way more numbers of rational folks who see through your lame attempt to hide from your own record.

Great idea, lets throw out the most bipartisan guy in Washingtong and replace him with a left wing extremist who will vote party line every step of the way.  That will help fix our polarization and gridlock.

And a state like MA, which relies VERY heavily on federal handouts, won't have a single Republican to approach speaker Boehner for more funding on health care, infrastructure, R&D, etc.

Tell me again how this is "smart."

A vote for Scott Brown is a vote for Mitch McConnell. That is reason enough not to vote for him. Brown is not bipartisan, he votes with Republicans virtually all of the time.

Elizabeth Warren's policies will be much better for the people of the Commonwealth. Scott Brown, not so much. If you love big-banks and Wall Street, then vote for Brown and good luck to ya!

Replies

A very reasonable belief!  Personally, I think Brown would continue to work with Democrats and pass good moderate legislation, where I believe Warren would not find partners across the aisle to work with, and would add to the gridlock in Congress.

Brown is "bipartisan" like replacement refs are dependable.

And Honest Liz will vote along the Nancy Pelosi Party Line 100% of the time. The Bipartisan argument by Lefties is laughable.

BushKeptUsSafe -- Nancy Pelosi is the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives. She's a Congressman, not a Senator. Your expertise will certainly impress people with the importance of your opinions.

This is of course a completely 'filtered' version of events that could have come directly from the Warren campaign.  The Law directory was used for hiring decisions, no one argues that.  Warren said she checked the box as minority in that directory to "meet others like her" ... but the directory does not differentiate race/ethnicity ... it simply says 'minority' ... so there is no way Native Americans could find her via this.  The elopement story has been debunked, they went a town over, got married, returned home the same day.  The announcement was in the town newspaper.   Warren said she never told Harvard and Penn about her claimed minority status, until she got caught and changed her mind.

It is a completely reasonable stand to say that you know Warren lied about her heritage and 'gamed' affirmative action but you still think she would be a better Senator than Brown, but it's not honest for a reporter to ignore the reality.

Now, about Warren practicing law, representing clients in Massachusetts cases involving Massachusetts law without being a member of the Mass bar .... ???

Replies

Why is it that Brown supporters never say anything about Browns positions or accomplishments?  Just increasingly crass attacks on his oponent.  Hmmmm....

Hey esfsdfsdf -

Senator Brown's votes are on the record.  I agree with something like 2 out of 3 of his votes, much better than most in Congress and certainly better than I think Warren's would be.  If Warren and the Boston Globe were making the argument that yes, Warren wasn't truthful on the Native American issue, yes, she gamed affirmative action and the Globe at least reported on the issue of her not being a member of the Mass bar that would be great.  They could take an honest position of we know these failings and we still believe she would be the best candidate.  But that's not what they are doing, they continue to make false arguments and tell 1/2 truths to cover up bad behavior.

But by all means, review Brown's voting record and make your decision on that.   For me, same as we've seen over and over in political scandals the coverup is as bad as the crime.

Brown plays to the haters out there. A look at the votes and policies advocated by Brown would turn off 90% of the Massachusetts electorate. Wake up folks before we end up with a Senator voting with the Republican right 99% of the time. Bye Bye--Home mortgage deductions, medicare, healthcare, social scurity, etc.. Vote Warren!!!!

Replies

"end up with a Senator voting with the Republican right 99% of the time"  ... you understand he would have to totally change from his current voting record to do that?   It's reasonable to disagree with his votes, but he has been the 2nd most bi-partisan Senator, much more so than John Kerry who DOES have a 99% party-loyal voting record.

I get it. Let's vote for another Democrat who will vote party line 100% of the time!

We are, or should be, struggling to find answers to the most difficult questions a nation can face. Will we go to war again in the Middle East to delay, but not eliminate, Iran's nuclear ambitions? Will we continue to take half measures on the economy such that we are unable to swing it in a positive direction and leave it limping along? Will we continue to substantially ignore the effects of fossil fuels on the environment so that oil companies can make a profit in this generation while leaving devastation to the next? Will we begin to find ways to solve the problems create by technology being so productive that jobs are lost that cannot be replaced, creating a class of unemployables who will be treated with contempt by the "Job Creators" and who will suffer the scourge of self-contempt by their inability to form families and support them? We need wise, intelligent, thoughtful elected representatives to work on these problems and a hundred other ones. And what are we talking about? Whether Elizabeth Warren's 89 year old aunt had an accurate memory of conversations she had when she was 15 years old. If this is the center of Scott Brown's campaign, the first thing he brings up in interviews and debates...well, that tells me a lot about who he is and what he has to offer.

So many of us are one-half this or one-quarter that; Tiger Woods is more Asian than African in background; isn't the point that it's wrong to judge people by their appearance? Warren was an affirmative action hire as a woman. Women were under-represented in elite law school faculties, and Prof. Warren authored pioneering research and won awards for teaching dry subjects like bankruptcy and contracts. This controversy isn't about Native Americans it's about triggering resentment against affirmative action. Women are still under-represented in the US Senate and Warren would bring the same insight, clarity and grit to Washington, where it's badly needed!

I've always felt it was Brown's election to lose. Sadly, Brown's behavior is such that he will lose votes. What I find surprising is that by focusing on fluff and going negative with it he seems to be trying to lose. His job is to represent the interests of Massachusetts, and for the most part he has. It doesn't matter whether he does that in a partisan way or a bipartisan way. Warren has both positive and negative attributes, but she has yet to articulate that she will put Massachusetts' interests first, regardless of where the Parties split on an issue. Count me among the 18% undecided for now, but the way things are going neither Brown nor Warren will get my vote.

Thank you. Not to get into a 'love-fest' or anything but I've always admired the intelligent thought evident in your posts as well. I didn't buy Brown's argument that 'strategic voting' was important to prevent the Democrats from having a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, and I don't buy Warren's argument that strategic voting is important now.

Yvonne Abraham, if you wish me to continue to take your column seriously, or even read it ever again, you will not dismiss and apologize for Liz Warren's sins!!  Her lies are outrageous and if you can't bring yourself to acknowledge that, you shouldn't have a column!  Even here in Massachusetts!  wow

Kitchener - That's a pretty baseless charge. You have an abrasive and arrogant streak, but saying the Globe tells it's columnists what to write is certainly off-the-wall, and undoubtably untrue.

Columnists write on a variety of issues and exhibit a variety of opinions. I guess the bosses have lost contact with Jacoby and Sununu.

Many people have Indian blood.  More than 1/32.  And you don't see any of them using it to take opportunities away from those it was intended for!!  SHAME ON YOU!

Replies

Warren doesn't have 1/32 Indian blood. As a Globe reader you're confusion is understandable.  They went along with an unconfirmed report by a geneologist and when the geneologist admitted that there wasn't any proof for even the 1/32nd claim they buried a retraction.

I love it when trolls attack trolls.

Every single Globe columnist has taken a shot at Brown and/or Romney in today's paper. In addition, ALL letters to the editor are favorable to Warren and Obama. So much for a an open debate in this paer. We get it! You HATE all who don't agree with your liberal dribble. Do not have the audicity to complain about Fox News when you print such one sided articles as in today's paper. You must be getting desperate. Let's NOT talk about Obama going on the View when he should have been talking to world leaders this week as the Middle east boils over. Such partisianship is truly amazing.

Replies

Your spelling is also pretty amazing. Petty, I know, but it does detract from your otherwise cogent message.

You mean "inchoate" not "cogent" right?

Warren only had to take a DNA test to stop this whole  alledged LIE.

Harvard and the other schools ONLY had to provide the documents

asked for to stop any questions of her hire.

Warren has only HERSELF to blame for any alledged DOUBT.

WHY hasn't the GLOBE forced the issue?

Replies

Who cares? It matters little whether she is or isn't part Native American. The point is that she really thinks she is. It has NOTHING to do with what kind of job she will do. How about Mr. Brown's nude pictures? Let's dig them up too!

skikilli - Actually, to claim it you need to both have Native American ancestry AND maintain current ties with the Native American community. She fails on both counts.

astalt12 - Did you hear that Howie Carr IS having Warren's DNA tested?   A Howie listener got her to sign the PowWowChow cookbook (no kidding!) and when she did it she first put the pen in her mouth.   No promise that it has enough to do the test but he's trying!

It's easy to see that Karl Rove is involved in Scott's campaign now! I hope everyone can see that he is after all a Republican and he is beholden to the ultra right now. I have seen this form of politics for too long now, sling it and sling it until it sticks. Truth doesn't matter to Rove, just keep up the negative. I hope he keeps it up because there will be blowback for him and he might actually lose!

Brown is definitely beholden to the Republican Party and unfortunately the Republican Party is beholden to the right-wing, many of them fairly extreme. These are not conservatives in the usual sense of the word.

Once he has a 6-year term, Brown will be expected to toe the Republican line if he wants any important committee assignments. He will probably be allowed an occasional moderate vote so he can continue to claim bipartisanship, but probably not many of them until he's close to running for re-election, 4 or 5 years down the road.

That's my prediction if he's re-elected, but I hope I don't ever find out.

I can just imagine Dick Nixon ... Seriously?  Another column in the paper about this silly Watergate thing?  When there's an issue and a coverup, yes, no reason to stop.  It's not 'Mean' to inform voters about the truth, whether it's not having Native American ancestry OR associating with Native Americans and claiming minority status or practicing law in Massachusetts without being a member of the bar.

Suddenly Sensitive Globies are all worked up about a few Tomahawk Chops. Funny, I never see anything here when Union Thugs show up at every Republican Public Event there is and try and use Intimadation. But Union Thuggery is Okay according to Sensitive Globies!

BushKeptUsSafe - have you never heard of 9/11 - and, it so happens BushKeptUsSafe was president at the time this happened. Think about it!!!

I read arguments from liberals, but rarely do they express anger and hatred.

What is wrong with people on the right? Why do they hate everybody? Why do the ridicule and insult anyone who disagrees with them? Why do they keep bringing up the same groundless issues (e.g., the law license) that have long since been debunked? Why are they so unhappy with their country, their state, and their lives?

It's pretty sad, actually.

A look into an incident in Scott Brown's recent past--an incident that his supporters conveniently overlook or have forgotten about--reveals a lot about the kind of man he really is. Not only did he co-sponsor the Blunt Ammendment, sign the Grover NORQUIST PLEDGE, and vote against help for 9/11 first responders while pushing a bill to build a gold course on your dime, in 2007 he went on a profanity-laced tirade at an assembly at the King Philip School.  Here's a handy little reminder of that little jewel of a day in 2007 when a very petty, thin-skinned father and senate candidate went bezerkers on a bunch of high school kids. His actions on that very day alone should have rendered him unworthy of EVERY being called senator.

THE SUN CHRONICLE
WRENTHAM - It was unprofessional and inappropriate for state Sen. Scott Brown to read obscenity-laced comments at a high school assembly, several King Philip Regional High School students said Friday. The students said Brown, R-Wrentham, crossed the line when he read the comments and singled out students by name at the assembly. http://www.thesunchronicle.com/news/lawmaker-s-words-outrageous-some-at-king-philip-claim/article_3985c3e2-121d-56c8-be09-2dc28626977c.html

Here is his even more bizarre behavior following the incident. Hear for yourselves.

BLUE MASS GROUP
Scott Brown’s profanity laced tirade during an assembly at King Philip High School has been well covered in a number of places. But, what has not been as well covered is his bizarre behavior following the event, and this behavior is perhaps even more indicative of his unsuitability for office than merely launching a swear-filled rant at a room full of high school students. http://bluemassgroup.com/2010/01/scott-browns-real-king-philip-craziness/

Harping on Warren's ancestry is making Brown look increasingly like a Donald Trump/birther clone. Is this the legacy he wants to leave, including standing by members of his staff engaged in overtly racist behavior? Massachusetts can do better than Scott Brown, and we voters are empowered to turn him out on Nov. 6
