Boston’s Splash Ultra Lounge was forced to close and cited for overcrowding and serving alcohol to minors after an inspection sparked by a father’s complaint that his daughter had run up a $2,800 credit card bill there during a bash where underage Boston University students were allegedly served.
Boston police inspected the Kneeland Street club Saturday after receiving the complaint from the father, who told them that his daughter had attended a recent Saturday afternoon event there in which nightclub staff allegedly offered unlimited bottle service to the underage students.

$2,800 bar bill? What are they serviving? I live near there and that place always did look dodgey
Some things are left annoyingly ambiguous here:
Firstly, the timeline of events. It sounds like this father learned of the $2,800 credit card bill, tipped off the police, and then the police searched the party all within a few hours of one another. This is somewhat extraordinary, but it also sort of implies that the father was talking about a credit card receipt, and not a statement, which means his daughter must have owned up to it, since he would not yet have received anything in the mail.
Secondly, why would the police consider an egregious credit card bill to be cause to search a party? The implication is that the overspending daughter was under 21, but this is never actually stated. If it were the case then the whole story would make sense. If it wasn't, it *sort of* implies that the police were just looking for an excuse to raid the place. There is no law against a bar selling alcohol to someone who is paying with daddy's credit card, provided she is of legal drinking age.
Lastly, and this is only partly a complaint against the Globe, I really hate that between serving alcohol to minors (which has a well documented history of being almost completely harmless) and significant overcrowding (which has a well documented history of killing people en masse when there is a fire), it is the underage drinking that gets the real attention (and the mention in the headline).
The father may have checked the credit card online and the uderage drinking is a major problem especially if you are a parent. Headlines get people to read the story and sell newspapers.
Almost 70 years to the day and only blocks away from the Coconut Grove and we still have the same problems in night clubs. Overcrowding and blocking of emergency exits, it seems that Greed always trumps safety in this venue.
