Holiday traffic delays expected on Pike

Mass. toll plazas will have extra staff

Leaf-peepers and other travelers returning home after the holiday weekend should expect delays following the massive, 45-mile traffic jam on the Massachusetts Turnpike Friday night.

State officials said they will have enough staff at highway toll plazas to accommodate the heavy return traffic, but cautioned that the sheer volume of people heading home on this popular holiday inevitably will lead to delays. They expect the turnpike and Interstates 93 and 95 in particular to be slow going.

Typical Democrat government knee-jerk reaction to solving a problem - extra staff & overtime pay.

The Democratic solution - more staff with higher costs. That is how they solve toll problems.  That is how they get Union PAC money - to H with the inconvenience to the motorists.

You finally have a day off, you finally have a holiday weekend, and Democrats ruined it with a three hour jam on Friday to be followed by another today, JUST TO COLLECT A TAX!!!!   Democrats, there are a thousand ways to collect these taxes without ruining the holiday weekend for hundreds of thousands of people!!!  For a tax!!  Democrats, when you ruin our holiday weekend for a tax, you INSULT us!  Vote against every Democrat this fall.  It is the only way they will get the message!!

What's with these Democrat holidays?

Stay off the Mass. Pike. It's a habit. From the Berkshires, take rte 20 east from Lee to Westfield or rte 2 east homeward bound. Travelers from NYC and Connecticut should stay on rte 95 to Providence or rte 84 to rte 6 east toward Providence. From rte 6, take rte 295 north to 95 north.

Correction: From rte 95, New Haven, take route 91 north to Hartford then to rte 84 to route 6 toward Providence. When reaching rte 295, head north to route 95.

It is astounding that people who tout their superior intelligence and advanced intellect on a regular basis in such forums as the Globe Op/Ed pages tolerate something as anachronistic, wasteful, and mind-numbing as toll booths.  Hmmm, let's force people to sit in outrageous lines, burn untold gallons of gas for no good reason, put wear and tear on clutches, brakes, and other moving parts, and pay likely-unionized toll collectors to do something a monkey can do, all just to take taxpayers' money.

Really?  REALLY?  What an embarrassment.  We'd expect this from a basket case like Maine or a state with no income or sales tax like NH, but Mass?  Is the tax rate just not high enough already?  Are there already not enough fees, surcharges, and add-ons?

Preposterous.
