Brockton man charged with shooting 8-year-old girl

Brockton police have charged a man with the Sept. 28 shooting of an 8-year-old girl, Lieutenant Paul Bonanca said. Police arrested Eric Leach, 28, at 7:10 p.m. Monday after they found him hiding in a second-floor apartment on Bunker Avenue, Bonanca said. On Oct. 2, police recovered a .22-caliber handgun with ammunition from the communal basement of the Bunker Avenue house, Bonanca said. The young girl was shot in the leg late last month on North Montello Street at 8:28 p.m. She suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Leach, a Brockton resident, was taken into custody and arraigned at Brockton District Court Tuesday, Bonanca said. Leach is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a child under 14, unlawful carrying of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. A not-guilty plea was entered on Leach’s behalf, according to the district court clerk’s office. Leach is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Nov. 13 and is being held on $500,000 cash bail.
