Coyote captured in Mattapan

If this were a Looney Tunes cartoon, it might unfold this way: A cornered Wile E. Coyote opens a box marked Acme Vanishing Powder and — poof — disappears.

No such luck for the scrawny intruder that wandered into Mattapan on Thursday.

Overreaction!  Let the coyote go!

They did let it go, somewhere safe.

In Nahant, smallest town in the Commonwealth, we had at least one coyote in residence for a year or two.  At one point he was sunning himself in my back yard and I managed to take several pictures of him, a far more handsome fellow than the one in this story. When I tried to quietly open the door to take a picture from the outside, his head snapped around at the sound, and when the door moved he disappeared, literally, in no more than two seconds.  He was reputedly poisoned by someone who lost a cat to him.  Most of us were sad to see him go.

We are such a nervous, panic-driven people.

Our immediate reaction is to capture and/or kill that which we think threatens us; and we seem to think that almost everything threatens us!
