Man rescued by police and firefighters after falling into trench near Melrose-Wakefield Hospital

Melrose police and firefighters rescued a man who fell into a construction site trench on Porter Street this morning.

The accident happened outside of the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital shortly after 9 a.m., Melrose Fire Captain Jim Winslow said.

The man was trapped in the trench for about 15 minutes and was taken to the emergency room at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital with minor injuries, Winslow said.

The man is not a construction worker. Police are investigating how he gained access to the area, he said.

Police plan on reviewing footage from a nearby surveillance camera to “better determine how it occurred,” Winslow said.
