Hanson Police Chief Edward Savage has resigned, before selectmen could fire him. In a statement issued Wednesday, selectmen said they accepted Savage’s resignation, effective Oct. 4. The board also said it has halted dismissal proceedings against Savage in order to avoid “protracted and costly litigation” and to “take steps to improve the Police Department under new leadership.” Savage had been placed on paid administrative leave Sept. 7 for unspecified reasons. Neither Savage, chief for the past 10 years, nor his attorney could be reached for comment.
