Police said a Westerly man faces murder charges after a stabbing that took place while Hurricane Sandy bore down on the state. Police said Mandell Tripp, 40, is being charged with second-degree murder in the death Monday of Kevin Brown, 37. Brown’s last known address was in South Kingstown. Police Chief Edward St. Clair said emergency personnel responded around 1:45 p.m. to a report of a vehicle crashed into a tree and found Brown unresponsive inside, apparently suffering from a stab wound. He was taken to Westerly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said witnesses described an altercation that had just taken place on Marriott Avenue, not far from the crash.
