Taunton police have released the name of a man who died when a sport utility vehicle crashed into a bridge and landed in the Taunton River early Saturday. Rafael Daveiga, 22, of Taunton, was driving south on County Street at 1:33 a.m. when he crashed through the guardrail of the Edward McCarthy Memorial Bridge, police said. The Taunton Police and Fire Department dive teams assisted in pulling Daveiga, who was severely injured, and the SUV from the river. Daveiga was taken to Morton Hospital in Taunton, where he died. While police are still investigating, Taunton Police Lieutenant Paul Roderick said speed was “certainly” a factor in the crash. The area of the river where the SUV landed was 8 to 9 feet deep, Roderick said.
