The veterinarian came before dawn, and Lou the ox was quietly euthanized.
The decision by the small liberal arts college in Vermont in early October to slaughter its beloved pair of oxen and serve their meat in the campus dining hall had sparked worldwide outrage.

Thanks to whomever turned on the light over the head of the president of this obscure little school and prevented Lou from being turned into burgers for the gang of defenders of the school's agricola.. . . Whether or not that president ever worked on a farm is unknown, but his embracing the idea of feeding a pair of slaughtered work oxen to the student body rated right up there with making the college parcheesee team a competitor on the world stage. . . . Wait until the local media swarm the campus to see if they can unearth Lou's resting place. . .
RIP Lou -- probably the best outcome if his injury was not treatable. Now, I hope an equal amount of compassion will be put forth for Bill. He should go to a sanctuary -- what on earth would be the down side of that? I am not a PETA extremist and I do eat meat -- but the meat I eat is not from animals I gave names to, who were called by their names for years, and who worked hard doing my bidding. Even the farm family I knew that bred their milk cow every year and raised the offspring for meat, if it was male, traded with the neighbors down the street when it was time to butcher the steers, so they would not be eating an animal they'd had a relationship with. We are not in the Stone Age anymore, college people -- you are trying too hard to be "sustainable."
