Six firefighters were killed on Nov. 15, 1942, battling a fire at the Luongo Restaurant in East Boston. Just two weeks later, 492 people died in the Cocoanut Grove Nightclub Fire, which overshadowed the earlier blaze. A 4-foot granite monument to honor the firefighters who perished in East Boston will be unveiled Thursday at Maverick Square, and city officials and the relatives of the victims hope it will bring awareness to the sacrifices of those and other firefighters.
