The nightmare long before Christmas

REVERE — At first, I thought it was a migraine coming on.

There, on a hill overlooking Route 145 in Revere, was a seizure-inducing mass of flashing lights. Sometimes candy does this to me. But Halloween was just a couple of days earlier, and I’d barely gotten halfway through my kid’s goody-bag. I looked again. There was no mistaking it: The house on Hillside Avenue was getting its Christmas on. In the first week of November.

I'm with you. Christmas is starting to absolutely stink in my nostrils because it arrives so early. I won't patronize a business that puts up decorations before Thanksgiving. Aside from vacationing for two months in a Muslim country, where is one to escape the Christmas Creep?

Instead of whining about early Christmas decorations, how about doing an article directed at all the political yard signs still posted in peoples yards and on their houses. A number of them will still be seen peeking through the coming snows.

I understand wanting to get the lights and decorations up while it's still warm and not snowing, but why turn them on so early? That stuff uses a lot of extra energy and therefore money. You would think most people would want to maximize their holiday bang while minimizing their holiday buck.

I ran into CVS to buy candy at 5pm on Halloween and as soon as I walked in the door I was face to face with Santa. It was a 5-foot tall Santa just blocking my path to the bags of fun sized chocolate. That just kind of jarred me awake to the extent of Christmas creep. Who is buying Santas on Halloween night anyway?

Oh, I so agree! I used to look forward to Christmas lights & decorations, but now they go up so early I'm sick of them before Thanksgiving! I wish everyone would go back to celebrating holidays during the month in which they occur only. Thank heavens 103.3 FM was sold and although they play awful music, at least they don't start non-stop Christmas Carols beginning in mid-October any more. Sigh.
