Mitt Romney has figured out the key to winning presidential elections. Like so many great insights, it came just a bit late.
Turns out the secret is generosity. Shower enough gifts on the swing voters and — surprise! — they will vote for you. Even against a man who had far better ideas for the future of the country.

Many of the "god-people" are really p.o'd after this election because their self image of being God's spokesperson has been shattered. God has let them all know, that THEIR message of bigotry, racism, misogyny, and damnation in Hell (I mean who can even invet a place like Hell other than the hypocritical "loving" Christians), is not HIS message. Sanctorum, Gingrich, Palin, Perry, Bachmann (as far as her grandiose vision of herself being president), Akin, Mourdock, West, etc., etc., all bannished in favor of people of hope and love of their fellow man. Franklin Graham, spewing his poison, saying (hoping really) that if we go down the path of the president and his liberal aganda it will be to the destruction of the country. The true Christian heart of hatred and revenge is laid bare for all to see, now that that know they were on the losing side. A "rabbi" says that Sandy was God's retribution against gays....more hatred from a "god" person. And now Romney, who has been winning all his life finds out that his "exclusionary" god has now excluded and deserted him. so sad to see them all so sad and bitter.
That is the beauty of being a liberal, isn't it? No worries about morality or standards; just that ol' sixties mentality of "do what feels good". If being constrained by morality and ethics is being a "god-person", then count me in! The alternative is too ugly to consider.
It IS one of the good things about being a liberal, I'll give you that. But just between you and me, this business of smoking pot at 5:00 A.M. is beginning to take its toll on me. I guess even feelin' good has its limits.
I could care less for this guy. I really have a problem with those average, middle class citizens who put up signs in their yards for him. I mean it was clearly evident that romney's interests were not in sync with the hopes and dreams of the middle class...what were people thinking? The conclusion appears evident to me that they could never, ever vote for someone like Obama....our first black president who inherited a mountain of detritus from the previous administration. The black guy had his shot while romney and his hermann munster look a like running mate had all the answers. The problem was that these two kruds could not explain what they going to do other than to undo the progress that Obama was making. Those middle class dopes bought the romney ryan kool aid without blinking an eye. Ideally, romney goes into an Elba like exile and we never hear or see about him....it is those middle class "savants" that we always have to be aware of....
Yeah, middle and lower income folks who were conned by slick talking handsome men, like Regan (Reagan Democrats?)and Romney, who simply repeated "America and Jobs" over and over again, even though the policies of both men were completely contrary to middle class average Americans. And Romney's inner circle..mostly Eric what's his name...telling Mitt, essentially, that he could say one thing one minute and something completely opposite the next, and the "savants" would never notice because they were too busy watching The Simpson's and Fox News. And they were almost right.

I'm sorry, Mr. Walker, but you couldn't be more mistaken from the first line of your column to the last. The notion that the policies that have given us sub-2% growth, trillion dollar deficits, unemployment at 8%, a tax environment that threatens the very existence of business, nationalized health care choices, and a Balkanized electorate where the President targeted sub- sub-groups with specific goodies to entice their votes and pitted each group against the other is NOT the best approach for the country. As we'll all see over the next four years, you can't take capital out of the private sector in the form of taxes and expect a vibrant, dynamic economy that will "lift all boats".
But, certainly, we see the results of the President's policies now; I'm just not sure how those people who voted for this President believe things are going to change under these policies in the future. As I flip through the pages of my freshman economics book, looking for the chapter on the economic stimulus of "taxing the rich", maybe you can answer that question.
If Mr. Romney is bitter at all (and I don't sense that from his recent comments), it's because he sees the same thing that those of us who didn't get free Obama-phones, free contraception, discounted student loans, amnesty/citizenship, two years of unemployment compensation, a guarantee for free health care insurance, the promise of preferences in hiring, or the untorrid satisfaction that "the rich are going to pay", an electorate unwilling to hold a President accountable for his failed polices because "Santa Claus came to town".
Mitt????? Is that you??? Happy Saturday morning, my man!!!!
The deficit you are referring to is the result of insufficient revenue (i.e. taxes) and two Bush wars. Perhaps you weren't around during the Clinton years when we had higher taxes, a balanced budget and a booming economy.
Only an elitist truly believes that 47% of us don't want to work for a living. I know professional people who have spent two to three years looking for work before settling for a service job that pays 40% of what they had been earning. Should they have gotten extended unemployment benefits? I guess you think not.
We are living in a world where good jobs are going away mainly due to automation. For sure we've lost jobs to outsourcing, but millions of manufacturing jobs, telephone jobs, service jobs and even engineering jobs have been lost to automation and will never come back. If the wealthy among us don't loosen our purse strings the impact on our society-on our country-will be devastating.
And then of course there's the glorious way the Obama-kissing media is kicking their beloved one's opponent -- who won more than 47% of American voters -- as he's allegedly down, for a private conversation he had with his donors, that is none of the media's business, but how they hate hearing the truth. Mitt was just repeating the oft-noted deToqueville/Tytler quote about how democracy can survive only until the majority of the electorate discovers it can vote itself "free stuff". I recall Ann saying a few months ago that this is the last campaign for president, and I'm sure she meant it, having had to endure watching the Obama-kissing media in action two presidential elections in a row. Now she and Mitt will retire to a far happier life than most Obama-kissers will have; you look a little grim there in the photo, Adrian.
Ann Romney!!??? I don't believe I've ever heard a more shallow, insubstantive person in my life. "I love you women" (but my husband is going to do everything possible against your interest, if he becomes president. In other words "I love you" enough to get your vote, but I just don't care about what happens to you after that). She epitomises the eletist, sheltered, pampered, and just a little air-headed, wife of a filthy rich man.
When too much wealth is concentrated in the hands of the few, that is when collapse of capitalism will occur. The top 1% has nearlly 25% of the nations wealth and climbing,as you can be sure they have done better even during the recession. If the middle class (still not properly defined) does not have the resourses to purchase goods, the economy will not flourish, plain and simple. The wealthy, has and always will spend and invest their money, no matter what the national economic picture looks like. So the difference boils down to the rest of us that really are the economic movers. The real income redistribution has already happened, to the wealthy.
Surprise. This is the real Mitt as many have said for months. A bitter, divisive fool who thinks that the world owes him this job and who is shocked to find his money cannot buy everything.
Exactly right.
but Pres. Obama can buy votes by promising free everything and amnesty.
adrian, hopefully this is your last Romney article. time for you to look at our country and see where it's headed, Obama won, remember.

Dear Mr. Walker,
I have never written a comment before but felt compeled to do so. Your peice in today's sunday Globe was just fantastic reading....I chuckled when you wrote about Goldwater being an extremist nut and found myself nodding when you said Romney was being a bitter elitest.
Just great reading..Thank you!
He wanted to be president to about 20% of the country - millionaires and billionairs and owners of significant capital. He did not like being told anything by the remaining 80% - certainly not those working shmucks in that 80%; certainly not those old, "greedy" do nothing retirees on social security; or soldiers retired from service and getting free health care. I mean, picking on middle-class college students because of their loans? He sent 5 kids to school and left them with no debt! Does he realize how lucky he is?
He worked and earned it. Responsibility is foreign to the left.

yes a man who gives millions to charity, didn't take a salary for being a governor or president of the Olympics and also gave his time to those in need, has a wife with MS and breast cancer doesn't understand people...whose father marched in the civil rights movement and sold paint out of the back of his car...(other words earned his wealth) is a mean bitter person.
Of course how could he compete with our give away president...free birth control (that you could get at Wal-Mart for $10.00) but would rather spend the money on beer or cigarettes or college kids that go to these elite schools that cost $50 thousand or more each year where the professors like Elizabeth Warren get paid $350 thousand to teach ONE course is Mitt's fault they are in debt.
He was not talking about our veterans, seniors that paid all their lives into social security & medicare, but the EBT cheats, those on SSI that do not belong on it and promising amnesty to illegals all for votes.......Greece here we come....but don't worry Pres. Obama will make more then the $100 million dollars that Pres. Clinton and VP Al Gore have made since leaving the white house.....Michelle will continue to have her very rich vacations and buy her expensive clothes (that cost more then Ann Romneys)...so don't worry if the US goes down the hell hole, because Pres. Obama and friends will make out fine and the rest of us will not. Remember his health insurance isn't under Obamacare...yours is and the 15 member death panel is in charge of yours.
Give it up Beanie! We've heard these lines before and they didn't sell. By the way, I didn't see Mitt marching in any civil rights demonstrations but I heard he and his gang beat up a gay kid, that he dressed up like a cop, and that he demonstrated for the war in vietnam while avoiding enlisting. what a phoney!
Mitt did hide his money in the Mormon church so he didn't have to pay taxes for 10 years and then he only paid taxes so he would have something to show when he ran for president.
We come to bury Caesar not to praise him. Can we just be done with the funeral? It's over.
There is war in the middle east, poverty at home, children are hurt or disappear or can't read, jobs going to H-1 visas or to Asia, etc.
Let's find something we all care about.
Romney: Arrogant, "holier than thou attitude", a shepard with a flock who has something to hide. Very scary beliefs.
Completely out of touch with the American People.
Is your employment at the Globe pro bono? I base this conclusion on the amateur and mediocracy of your selected subjects. There exists no evidence that you have impartial talent. I once read an article by a black professor at a black college in the south in which the professor clearly stated that the two greatest injustices inflicted on blacks was "SLAVERY" and "Welfare". Now there is a subject somewhat alien to your interest but stastically factual.
Their once exsisted in Boston neighbor hoods that were proud and livable. They are now monuments of drive by killings, drug wars and extreme violance. Would you or your editor even consider such a PC subject for publication, history reflects your lack of real, important subjects. Your biased writings are intolerant of importance.
Way to sound totally incoherent, snowstorm...
@bojangles: even on the second reading I've no idea what this has to do with Romney. Borderline racist, though.
Romney is bitter because he was "entitled" to the presidency like he was with everything else in his life. Perhaps in his retirement, he can rise above his embrace of materialism and help those most in need.
he helps more people in need in one year then you would do in a life time. How many millions do you donate to charity each year.
dear beantowndebater, Mitt Romney's donation is mostly to the Mormon church. He's required to give it. Not sure he's actually helping any people.
Mitt appears to believe that failure is a matter of personal responsibility. Until it is your own.

The "old playbook"Romney desccribed has been used by, mostly Democrats, for decades. You can go back to
NYC at the turn of the century and Tammany Hall courting the Irish community before election day.
Well said, Mr. Walker. There few things as unattractive as bitterness.
I wish Democrats and other progressives would stop trying to tell the Republicans why they really lost the election. If they want to think it is because of gifts or Sandy or a bad candidate or demographics or being able to get the vote out or the software failure of Orca or not being conservative enough or sending blacks to Maine to vote ---- then let them. That way they will continue to lose and that is what we want! Don't point out that their policies, or as Mitt liked to say principles, are out of touch with the average American.
I did enjoy this article almost as much as not seeing those smug self-satisfied entitled mugs of Mitt and Ann everytime I turned on the TV. Good bye and good ridance.
What makes anyone think he can look down on people, insult them, dismiss them and then expect to have them vote for him? Before this I had thought lots of negative things about Romney, but stupid wasn't one of them. Now it is.
Secure the borders
too bad he is right in a lot of ways.Amnesty, gay rights nevolution, class warfare obama phone
what is nevolution?
And how was he right about gay rights?
And you do realize the "Obama phone" is just a GOP talking point, right? The program was initated in 1984. Lesseee who was President then? oh, right RONALD REAGAN. But Reagan Phone doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

Mr. Walker, Have you read any of this... http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2012/11/14/the-great-mormon-etch-sketch/0pFVAp7Reis7fQyoM2QIlK/story.html Take a look,... then we'll talk,... ok? P.S. Thanks, again Mr. Beam!
Good article. Romney is sincere in what he's saying. He's not a bad person. But he really doesn't get it--why he lost or Obama won. His ideas are overly simple. They show a shallowness, a deficit, in his understanding of others, and of himself too.
It's characteristic of narcissistic individuals, and of authoritarian personalities, to be lacking and shallow in both insight into others and insight into themselves--self-awareness on the one hand, empathy on the other. The two are inter-dependent.
What we've seen with Romney and his campaign--and his past and his present--are the shortcomings of any candidate who is a "narcissistic" or "authoritarian" personality (much overlap in the two labels). I don't want to disparage Romney in particular, here, but to inform. We can understand our political candidates, our political parties, and our political process a lot better if we cross-reference them to what we know and talk about in other contexts.
It's not his fault that he is what he is. To become a more fully mature person, one needs help from others, not just in money or privilege, but in authentic, caring, and nurturant relationships. Romney's doing the best he can with what he has. But he doesn't have enough to become a good public leader.

Now we will suffer the consequences of the takers votes. Ignorance and greed have results. Time will demand payback on foolish acts.....just rewards filled with bitter after taste.
He wOn. Get Over it.
Time for Mitt to find a rock to crawl back under.
WTG, Adrian Walker! Hit the nail on the head once again. However, it will take some doing for Romney to turn around his thinking. Is he capable of it?
Romney was 1000% correct. Obama ran the perfect dirty campaign of lies and distortion. Romney was obviously the better candidate to get America back on track but, the voters of this country can be an embarassment. I recently traveled outside the country after the election and people in other countries can't believe we voted back in the worst President since Jimmy Carter. Time will tell how much worse America will be with 4 more years of Obama.
You must have traveled in Antarctica. The international response to Obama's victory was overwhelmingly positive.
appears those blinders you may be wearing shut out everything..nice try though mitt, ann, tagg.....
keep it up, yahoos all over the country. keep attacking the voters, women, minorities and anyone who is not wealthy.
can you spell 'Whig' ?? better yet, can you spell 'Federalist'??
Mittens is, quite frankly, a mean man. His 'rescue' of the Winter Olympics was funded by the federal government. His 'phenomenal business success' he actually believes was a result of his superior intelligence and embrace of risk.
Please, please, please ... let's have more Romneys, Perrys, Gingrinches and the other Clown Car Republicans in 2016, 2020 and beyond. Dont listen to the voices of moderation. Sure you remember that clarion call of an earlier loser: extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.
What has been interesting about this post election analysis is to appreciate it by having friends and acquaintances, as I do, who voted for Romney and who were as "shellshocked" as he the next day. I abstained from a lot of their confrontational discussions for several months before the electiion. Excuses were all over the place, either Senator Rubio or Senator Portman should have been picked, though they all to a person loved the Ryan pick saying previous to the election that he was the perfect pick. Even among the commentators on Romney's side in Comments in this newspaper nary a complaint made. Young women getting "free birth control" was another reason, forgetting that they get the prescription just like most of us get our meds, pay premiums and copay then get your pills, just like the older males get their Viagra. Immigration? Remember when Romney ( and those Democrat female women nominated for Attorney General had those "illegal immigrant nannies?" ) employed illegal immigrant landscaping workers for whatever reasons. Both sprending their hard earned money on the cheap for their kids and plants, hey, what's the difference as long as you're saving a buck? Solution, immigration = self-deportation, whatever that piece of whimsy meant. Reagan, George W., and powerhouse Senators McCain and Clinton proffered reasonable immigration compromises but the "conservative" Romney and the right ( wrong ) wing of his party demonized the immigrants not realizing it affected the nonmonolithic Hispanic American citizens. The observations go on an on. Bottom line is rich people, middle income people and poor people voted for both candidates ( note the Red States that get an inordinate amount of "gifts" voting for Romney ). More in each of all those groups voted for Obama. Have a Happy Thansgiving everyone. Now where do I go to pick up my free turkey?
