Peggy McCarter; activist took soft-spoken approach
An activist for half a century, Margaret Douglas McCarter served as president of the Massachusetts chapter of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and was part of the group’s national leadership. Her sons said she also participated in the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, belonged to civil rights organizations, protested the arms race, and traveled to several countries on human rights fact-finding missions. “The diversity of the campaigns is just amazing,” her son Brian said.
