New GM pledges openness at MBTA helm

Beverly Scott defends record in Atlanta, says she’s ready for a challenge

Defending her record in Atlanta, the MBTA’s next general manager promised transparency about her past service and about her plans to help lift the beleaguered T to fiscal health.

Beverly A. Scott, a former university professor who has spent 35 years working in public transit, returned Saturday to Boston for the first time since being selected by the state’s transportation board in September — the same day an audit by the international firm KPMG found Atlanta’s transit system to be in deep financial trouble.

There is a failure here to mention the candidates troubled past with her previous post in Atlanta.

The Globe ,again showing it's weakness to stand up for truth here in Ma.

The Globe failed to mention her trouble past?  Did you check the headline?

I'm going to go further and guess you didn't read the article.

Here's the first two paragprahs:

Defending her record in Atlanta, the MBTA’s next general manager promised transparency about her past service and about her plans to help lift the beleaguered T to fiscal health.

Beverly A. Scott, a former university professor who has spent 35 years working in public transit, returned Saturday to Boston for the first time since being selected by the state’s transportation board in September — the same day an audit by the international firm KPMG found Atlanta’s transit system to be in deep financial trouble.

outrageous, people wonder why the people are disgusted with government. Gov.Patrick needs to resind this offer.

Atlanta's problems may not be her fault, but a good leader still should take some responsibility for her organization and not weasel out. But, we must recognize that this, like most state positions, is a political  appointment, so the candidate is always going to be a mediocre political creature, not a professional. At least this one is a "person of color", so that requirement is fulfilled.

Racist much?

esfsdfsdf,

Don't be in such a hurry to condemn.  The MBTA has had a checkered past in dealing with people of color.  I agree with blisterpeanuts.  The T needed to bring on a minority GM.  My concern is did they really bring on the right, minority candidate?  Maybe not.  Time will tell.

Atlant's problems are now Boston's problems.  It is absolutely ridiculous that this woman was chosen to head the troubled agency.  I can only ask who sponsored her fort his job and how much money was paid to their campaign.

Those readers who advocate for the importance of government should be concerned when appointments such as this take place as they undermine credibility and feed the anit-government crowd.  Pinky swears and hugs?????  Really??  Is she related to Carol Johnson?

In Atlanta, a business psychologist was hired to help Scott with her "management style." I suspect that what is meant by "management style" is that she may have control issues. Administrators with control issues can do great damage to any organization as every perceived criticism is taken personally and payback is due. So, I think we'll see/hear more about Ms. Scott and her "management style" in the future. Good luck to the MBTA employees.

The T should raise fares until the revenue is sufficient to cover all the costs associated with running the system (including salaries and pensions).

I lived in Atlanta for 16 years after spending the first 22 years of my life in the Boston area.  MARTA is an absolute and utter joke.  It's not ridden by most anyone who can possibly even afford a jalopy because it's considered unsafe.  The rail service's reach isn't nearly wide enough as it doesn't even go directly to the biggest outdoor venue in the state:  Turner Field.  Nope, you have to get on a bus from any terminating point to get to the stadium so most people drive causing a traffic nightmare.

The "L" in Chicago?  The "T"? The Metro?  MTA?  All viable means of movement for people of all incomes and ethnicities in those cities.  MARTA in Atlanta?  Only ridden by those who can't afford to drive.  And run that way.  Want proof?  Google why Cobb County in northwest Atlanta wouldn't allow MARTA  rail service to expand into its county.

Service cuts.  Service suspensions.  Rate increases.  Murders and rapes at Marta stations.

Unbelievable that this is the best the T could do.  Are you kidding me.  Really?  REALLY?

Does she know which stations she should clutch her purse tightly?
