A Springfield man who went shopping for a flat-screen television as Black Friday dawned faces possible child endangerment charges after leaving his girlfriend’s son in a car outside of a Kmart, police said.
Police officers found the 2-year-old sleeping inside a vehicle in the Springfield Plaza parking lot about 1:20 a.m., said Springfield Police Lieutenant Robert Moynihan.
The officers attempted several times to page the owner of the vehicle inside the store, but no one came forward. Police then broke a window to get into the vehicle and check on the child, Moynihan said.
A complaint has been filed against Anthony Perry, 34, regarding the incident, which is still under investigation, Moynihan said.
According to the Associated Press, Perry told police that the boy’s mother was working and that he had lost the child while shopping. He then called someone else for a ride.
The vehicle is owned by the boy’s mother, Moynihan said. Perry’s relationship to the child is unknown.
The state’s Department of Children and Families has also been contacted, he said.
