Facing weaker than expected state tax revenues, Governor Deval Patrick’s administration has curbed state hiring, halted an automatic income tax reduction, and begun identifying cuts in spending that may be necessary to balance the budget.
Recent tax collections have been unexpectedly disappointing, failing to measure up to last year’s levels. In October, revenues were $162 million short of budgetary estimates and $48 million below the level reached in October 2011.

I am still waiting for my cut in the Real Estate tax that DeVille Deval promised ? Is anyone surprised that we are going to face a proposed increse in the Gas Tax again by our buddy DeVille. I got an idea, lets cut all friends and hacks from the payroll that were appointed by this administration, that would save millions. Remember, "Together We Can " !!!!!

Not that it would deliver the amount of money necessary to balance a budget but how about instituting more Fast Pass lanes and cutting back on archaic toll booths? It would at least show that government is looking for common sense ways to cut expenses. Nothing against toll booth collectors either but technology advances cause people to have to find new ways to make a living. Again, this is a very minor thing but it just plays into the rational person's distrust of government's ability to operate efficiently.
There would be a budget surplus if the hacks were cut.
Funny. Republican governors ran on that for 12 years. And then brought in their own hacks. Shocking!
What happened in Syria yesterday? The Wall Street Journal has an article every day about the latest events. Curious that a financial newspaper will do that whereas a general newspaper like the Globe simply is not covering it any more. I'm sure that means the liberal decision is not to do anything, and, therefore, not to provide the public with news about something for which nothing will be done. That is an example of the Globe being inside the liberal distortion bubble and not providing the public with relevant news.

When taxes are raised make sure that some of that money goes into the Better Busses for Blacks (BBB) program (per yesterday's Globe article on the discrimination blacks are dealing with in their commutes that are much longer than for whites). I hope the venerable newspaper will also statistically analyze communiting times for Hispanics, single mothers, illegal immigrants, undocumented aliens, and the poor but not, for heaven's sake, communting times for Republicans, 3rd party nut cases, or those critical of the Mass Democrat Machine (DMD).
One more thing on my last comment: don't think that I am unsympathetic to black's long commutes. My commute is longer that a blacks's and I have to spend huge amounts on car expenses, gas, and even drive myself (not take the bus).
wait until next year if you think it's bad now, our economy is not improving so revenue will be down and unemployment will be higher.
I am confident that the MA Democrats that are millionaires (read Kennedy, Kerry, Warrens, not to mention our Governor) will step up to the plate and provide the needed revenues. You know who you are step up and help the middle class out. Walk the talk.
but let's raise taxes at the federal level.......
"After years of belt-tightening..." Oh sure... Instead of raising taxes, why not use the rainy day fund to make up the shortfall?
Cuts will probably come in Local Aid - that way, cities and towns can bear the brunt of having to raise property taxes, while Gov. Patrick can take credit for having balanced the budget without raising taxes.
You're confusing him with Mitt.
Have these incompetent clowns EVER underestimated revenue??? No. In the midst of the Obama recession they expect that tax revenue will go up, and spend accordingly. Can we recall this fool???
I would start by cutting all department staff by 10% letting go those unqualified hacks who were given jobs just because they "know" somebody. I'll bet things would even run better with less staff.
ippudo...the state will hire more people at bette wages and benifits. just watch

Warren Buffett had the right idea in his Op Ed in the NYTimes.
Taxing very large incomes (Romney lives here, yay) at 5 to 8% would help state revenues.
Not that it's a black or white issue by any stretch of the imagination, but a line needs to be drawn between those services government should provide and those that we could do without. This is what businesses have to do when faced with revenue deficits. They just can't keep raising their prices to cover up ineffeciencies. There's far too many stories of how inefficient our government operates for the average taxpayer to endorse raising taxes. It's much more difficult to cut expenses, programs, and agencies, with a lot of the collateral damage being done to the politically connected, than to raise taxes but our government owes it to its taxpayers to run as efficiently as possible. Time for the Patrick administration to step up and show they can be leaders who truly govern.
SECOND term, yet Deval still hasn't been able to learn the job description for a state Governor.
Although, he travels the country crowing like a little Bantam rooster about his accomplishments.
Tooo funny - if it wasn't so sad.
Deval will hirmore people, larger pensions , better wages , better benifits while the working stiff looses income and property.
Patrick is not the man who should have the job of Massachusetts Governor.
His idea of curbing state hiring is to appoint his unqualified Democratic friends & cronies to state jobs - AND - bypass the state Human Resources Department.
Eh? Deval - isn't that what you have been doing since you came to office?
NOTHING HAS CHANGED WITH YOU - STILL NO UNDERSTANDING OF STATE GOVERNMENT - MUDDLING ALONG - JUST BARELY REACHING MINIMAL STANDARDS - like your appointments.
To the fools running this state into the ground.
Recession: a period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters.
Depression: a long and severe recession in an economy or market.
When either is taking place there is NO growth, therefore revenues will NOT grow and more than likely as is in this case decrease. In a situation like this most intelligent people and responsible businesses would curtail spending and find ways to cut spending.
I think as do many in this state and country that it is time to seriously address the lack of intelligence and leadership in our government. The founding fathers would be appalled at the wholesale give away of hard working taxpayer money to individuals that do nothing for our society.
“There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him.” – Robert Heinlein
Stop wasting my money! With this as a call to action we should impose term limits on all elected positions, retroactively. We must purge our legislative process of these career politicians that are more concerned with lining their pocket than protecting ours. We must evaluate all entitlement programs and put them up for a public vote. We cannot continue to give away all of our wealth, therefore we must re-enact PAYGO both Federally and at the state level. This is just a short list.
I did not serve my country to give it all away!
"We cannot continue to give away all of our wealth". "I did not serve my coountry to give it all away!"
Wanna bet ?
This "discovery" will, of course, soon be followed by the "we must layoff teachers, firefighters and police" claim. Cut the idiotic subsidy of the Kennedy "Conservation" group to zero? Never! Fire those in "public safety" sinecures? You have to be kidding! Ask departments to trim their budgets in a uniform manner across the board? Impossible! No one can reduce a budget without tragedy ensuing.....at least in the public sector. The private sector and individuals manage to adjust their budgets without claiming a decrease of 10% amounts to "cutting to the BONE" as with every public sector budget. Seriously, can't anyone, anywhere, in any family, business or organization cut 10% out of their budget without "bleeding" to death?
