Mayor Thomas M. Menino has been hospitalized at least 11 times since taking office in 1993. Some of his previous ailments:

■ Swelling and pain in lower legs and feet

■ Surgery to repair drooping eyelids, a condition called ptosis

■ A broken toe

■ Minor surgery to remove a cancerous growth — basal cell carcinoma — from nose

■ Surgery on both knees

■ Hospitalized for cellulitis, a bacterial infection in left elbow, contracted on trip to Italy

■ Diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, an intestinal inflammation

■ Surgery on back for a rare form of skin cancer, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans
