EVERETT — The former Monsanto Chemical Co. site isn’t much to look at: a flat wasteland loosely paved with crushed rock, hidden between Route 99 and a commuter rail bridge tagged with neon graffiti.
But the 37-acre parcel on the Mystic River is the centerpiece of a stunning turn in the development of the state’s fledgling casino industry, having attracted the interest of Las Vegas casino builder Steve Wynn, one of the biggest names in the business, who visited the site on Wednesday.

Having worked in Everett for over twenty five years, I know the area. The Monsanto plot is ideal. It's about time that that abandoned wasteland is brought to good use. This also would reduce residential taxes as well. Everett has always been a haven for large companies like GE and ESSO. These companies paid huge taxes to the Town, thus reducing the residents' tax rate. Those who worry about traffic should realize that there are many routes to the area, that would not necessarily clog Broadway, that cuts through the middle of the city and look at the jobs the Casino would create.
I'm sorry to sound harsh, but to me there's something slimy about Steve Wynn. I'd prefer he didn't run any kind of business in Massachusetts.
