The last five years have been marked by the worst economic downturn since the Great ­Depression, and as a result many families have faced the prospect of losing their house.

Some have staved off foreclosure, while many thousands of others have not been so fortunate, leaving their lives upended and their children forced to adjust quickly to difficult conditions.
