Bird sightings

Recent bird sightings as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

► The Northern lapwing that frequented a cornfield on Summer Street near the Bridgewater Correctional Complex was still present Friday, and on Nantucket, two lapwings continued to be seen along the shore of Hummock Pond. Other sightings at Nantucket last week included four Eurasian wigeons, 21 harlequin ducks, 335 ruddy ducks, and a common gallinule.

At the marsh near the entrance to Kalmus Beach in Hyannis a little egret found last weekend was still present Friday. The egret had also been seen at nearby Keyes Beach where two black-headed gulls had also been observed.

► Newburyport: At Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island, 50 gadwalls, 75 Northern pintails, two Western grebes that had been frequenting the ocean beach off parking lot number one, 45 red-necked grebes, a great egret, a greater yellowleg, 122 razorbills, a barred owl, and the continued presence of small numbers of common redpolls. Along the Newburyport Harbor front, two American bitterns, a Virginia rail, a Wilson’s snipe, four marsh wrens, and a seaside sparrow.

► Salisbury: At Salisbury Beach Reservation last week, an “Audubon’s” yellow-rumped warbler, 20 red crossbills, and 250 white-winged crossbills.

► Boston: At the Arnold Arboretum,a palm warbler, two fox sparrows, three pine grosbeaks, four white-winged crossbills, and seven common redpolls.

Miscellaneous reports: The continued presence of Ross’s goose at Wolomolopaag Pond in Sharon; three cackling geese at the Bristol Agricultural School fields in Dighton; four redheads at Little Pond in Falmouth; single Pacific loons at Scusset Beach in Bourne and in Wellfleet Harbor, where two common murres were also seen; a golden eagle soaring over the fields on Argilla Road in Ipswich; a snowy owl and nine cave swallows at Duxbury Beach on Wednesday; single barred owls on Boston Common and on the MIT campus in Cambridge; an “Audubon’s” yellow-rumped warbler in the Boston Public Garden; and single yellow-breasted chats at Mass Audubon headquarters in Lincoln and the Boston Fenway.
