Dedham man arrested after being found behind altar at the Cathedral of The Holy Cross Church with wine and the Eucharist

A Dedham man is facing breaking and entering charges after being found lying in an area behind the altar of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End Wednesday morning, surrounded by candles, a bottle of sacramental wine, and a container of the eucharistic wafers, Boston police said.

Jorge Jose Guevara, 26, was arrested on a charge of breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony, police said. Guevara was found on the floor inside the front storage area behind the altar surrounded by several battery-operated candles, the wine, and the wafers, police said.

A witness at the cathedral discovered Guevara and several unauthorized candles lit in the church, including the attic and basement. The witness called authorities over fear that the cathedral would burn down.

Guevara told police that he came to the church “in search of peace.”

The Rev. Kevin O’Leary, rector of the cathedral, was not available to comment on the incident.

Guevara pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday in Boston Municipal Court, where he was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation after a consultation with the court clinician. His next court date is Dec. 28.
