Massachusetts Democrats are facing a tough political dilemma created by their own machinations: how to hold onto US Senator John F. Kerry’s seat in the face of a special election law they created eight years ago that is now working against them.
With all indications suggesting that Kerry will vacate the seat to become secretary of state, party insiders see huge hurdles that could include a divisive and expensive primary fight, followed by what will probably be a general election battle against Scott Brown, a popular Republican, who is seen by analysts as a strong contender in a low-turnout special election.

Let's see how senatorial Scott Brown responds to his constituency during this lame duck session and while he is mulling things over let's see if he will have a public meeting with people who voted him for him in the first place. He lost because he was wrong on the issues for this state and refused to be directly questioned by voters in Town Hall Meetings. He was rejected in a landslide vote and with a strong opposition political organization in place will meet the same result again. His voting record is not just conservative but illogical for these times.
Weld should run as an INDEPENDENT. He'd be good for Massachusetts because he's not really a Republican or Democrat. He could help reform a very disfunctional system!
Appointing Kerry to Sec. of State is playing right into the hands of the republicans. Kerry should stay right where he is. I am sure there are several other people who would do as Sec. of State. Why take the chance to give the repubs just what they want. That is the only reason they fought the Rice appointment. These people mean business.( repubs) They want to rule this country. Don't give them an inch.
Go Scott Brown! But watch out for Dem dirty tricks - 3 criminal Speakers of the House in a row, and their just off the big John Tierney mobster victory!
Two words: Mike Capuano. God, i love this guy!
In politics like sports you play the match-ups. Steve Lynch has everything that attracted voters to Scott Brown plus a big D after his name. If the party has a brain to split between the lot of them they'll get behind this guy early and in a big way.
Only in Massachusetts would a Governor's malfeance behavior, "to appoint a fellow Democrat to serve out the remainder of Kerry’s term through 2014", be openly discussed among the Democrats and the press corp. Unbelievable, Democrats want to circumvent democracy with political action to prevent the voting process from electing a Republican to an open Senate seat! Dastardly behavior by lowdown snakes.
No need to wonder why people are switching from registered 'Democrat' to 'Independents.'
Maybe on your next post you will enlighten us on the wonders of Republican gerrymandering in order to maintain control of the US Congress. Is that considered dastardly behavior by lowdown snakes too?
"I'm shocked. Shocked to find that gambling is going on in here."Cantabrigian, if you've ever lived in the South, I see you've conveniently forgotten what the behavior of Republican lawmakers in those states is like there.
Markey is the cream of the crop and would win an election
Wanna bet they change the law again so a Democrat gets the upper hand? And the people of this state will allow it.
