Judge rules against selectwoman

A federal judge has rejected a former Maine selectwoman’s efforts to keep statements she made to police out of her fraud trial. In her decision in the case of former Chelsea selectwoman Carole Swan, US Magistrate Judge Margaret Kravchuk questioned Swan’s statements in court that she couldn’t read or write. Swan faces charges that include extorting money from a contractor while she was selectwoman and of fraudulently inflating the cost of road projects awarded to her husband. The judge’s decision was made public Friday.
