Patrick to renew push for tougher gun laws

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said today that he will renew his push for tougher gun laws in Massachusetts in the aftermath of the massacre at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

Patrick said he spoke today to House and Senate leaders about acting on legislation he has introduced, which would, among other changes, forbid buyers from purchasing more than one gun a month.

The usual objection from the foxy FOX  and negative  radio talk-show hosts is that the bad guys would always find a way to get guns and that banning them, or limiting their purchase, only makes it harder for legitimate people to procure guns for their own protection. I think that guns should, at least, be given to those who are in a position to protect our children in addition to the police. Teachers and principals should be given hand guns. The school also should be adquately fortified against unauthorized entry during school hours. In the Newtown case, the deranged killer entered a window on the first floor.  First floor windows should be locked down and alarm systems fitted to them to signal forced entry to all school rooms and the prinncipal's office. Then, of course, there would have to be air conditioners installed on every first floor class room. Is there another option?

But what about lunch time when the elementary kids go outside to play? I can think of no other option than to stop that practice and offer play time inside or, if that were logistically impossible,  I would then suggest fortifying the playground area with a brick wall. There should also be security cameras surroundimg the school being monitored at the local police station. Or would the following suggestion be overkill? Would you also include an armed security person guarding the property? Similar safeguards should be employed in high schools and colleges where it is possible. Certainly, the suggested windows' safeguard could be possible.

In addition, I forgot the obvious: locking down the doors, which I believe is done anyway.

The governor has no idea what he is talking about. Straw purchasing occurs outside of Massachusetts,so his proposal will have no impact. He should encourage a national discussion about standardizing the gun laws so that they make sense and ensure that only responsible people have access to firearms. Lets talk about licensing, proficiency tests and security responsibilities. Banning a particular type of weapon does not address the problems. That is akin to banning Corvettes and telling drivers you can only drive Impalas. Would that prevent speeding? Patrick is clueless or misinformed.
