Lake Champlain pipeline design opposed

A Vermont company has filed for a state permit to start construction of a natural gas pipeline under Lake Champlain, but some local residents do not like the route. Vermont Gas said the line to International Paper in Ticonderoga, N.Y., is to be completed within three years. But some residents in Monkton and Hinesburg say part of the pipeline route would come too close to their homes. John Phillips, chairman of the Monkton Select Board, told Vermont Public Radio that the company has been asked to find an alternative route. A spokesman for Vermont Gas said it carefully balanced economic and environmental concerns in each of the communities before deciding on the pipeline’s path.
