US Representative Edward J. Markey, dean of the state’s Washington delegation, will run in 2013 for the Senate seat expected to open with the nomination of Senator John F. Kerry to head the State Department.
Markey, 66, a Malden Democrat elected to the House in 1976, is the first prominent candidate to declare a run for Kerry’s seat, which will be filled through a special election early next summer, probably in June. Kerry, a Democrat and head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is expected to be easily confirmed by the Senate in coming weeks as the next secretary of state.

Ed who? What has he ever done? There are too many members of the house.
Read something about him! It might help you gain some understanding.
Congressman Markey is not my congressman, but I have often wished that he was. He is a clear thinker who always says what he believes without being obnoxious about it. We could really use him in the Senate, where he would do his best to see to it that the President's appointees (Supreme Court, for example) are given attention.
Scott Brown is a nice guy, but in his political heart he is still a Republican and mostly votes like one. There is no reason to think that he would be different if given another chance at it.

Yes, they are most definitely worried.
Go to bed, Mike. You need some sleep.
Markey has been my Congressman since I came to Mass 30 years ago. He's an honest and decent man with excellent constituent services. He would be a very good Senator.
My only reservation is his age. It seems to me that 66 is a little late to start a Senate career.
The right-wing won't like him, of course, so you can expect the usual shallow name calling and groundless accusations. They'll do their best to get him elected by their excesses.
Sen. Daniel Inouye, the 88-year-old Democrat was a U.S. Senator from Hawaii since 1963.He died Dec. 17, 2012, while still a sitting member. He was in office since Hawaii became a state in 1959.
Senator Robert Byrd, Democrat and Klansman – assumed office in January 3, 1959, and served until he expired at the age of 92 years, in June 2010.
Very strange, but in both cases, their Washington colleagues expressed shock at their passing.
His cap and trade is a remarkable accomplishment. If passed, we'd be paying $9.00/gallon for gas and $400/month for electric bills while rich fat cats get richer. ANd his buddies on the Chicago Climate Exchange screw us big time.
Markey is a zero who done less than zero as a congressman.
At least I can finally vote against this do nothing phoney for once!
Raising gasoline taxes and (more tolls) are both excellent ideas. We should encourage people to drive more fuel efficient vehicles and to live closer to where they work.
OK, so far so good. Who else is going to step up?
Ed Markey has been my rep for DECADES and has been STELLAR, wonderful, fantastic one at that. I am almost more excited than I was for the GREAT Elizabeth Warren. Ed Markey IS A GEM. Wiki says " Markey is the Dean of the Massachusetts Congressional delegations and the second longest-serving member of Congress from New England, behind Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont .. He has served since 1976!!!!" Markey was born and bred in Massachusetts. He went to Malden Catholic, graduated from Boston College and went to Boston College Law School. PERFECT. I have met him twice and can emphatically affirm he is a CLASS act, experienced times 10, very very smart and GREAT on the issues of the middle class and great on energy policy. He will represent the 99% and has. He is NOT been bought by Wall Street or like Brown has been bought by the Republican Party of infinite money and the banks. Of course Markey has been a district candidate and now he must run a state wide campaign. BUT Brown no longer has the argument that he was from Mass and Elizabeth was an outsider. Markey is the CONSUMMATE Massachusetts candidate. And his pedigree is ALL AMERICAN. His father was a milkman and his son worked the American Dream and rose to great status. He is one of the best AND SMARTEST reps in Congress. Alternatively remember Brown voting against women with the Republicans and the banks 70% of the time. Brown if God forbid elected would be McConnell's boy on the debt ceiling and everything else. This is a MUST win for Markey and he has an A+ chance of taking it but not without our help and it needs to begin ASAP. Yes, yet again we who have Massachusetts in our blood running through our veins are called to serve our country by electing one of the strongest Democrats in Congress to fill the senate seat. Markey has served his time in the House for decades, knows the issues well and the Senate SHOULD be his next step. ARISE Democrats, Independents and others. Awaken yet one more time to win this one for Ed Markey -- a GREAT Democrat, great worker for the people and for the state of Massachusetts. Best of all he is a great human being. I have met him twice and loved him. We are SO lucky to have this choice. Let's convince the rest of the state of that as well. I cannot wait to begin supporting him just point me the way to his headquarters. This will be a great gift to ring in 2013. We must never falter and never fail.
Rep. Markey's wife, Dr. Susan Blumenthal is a physician and her credials are sterling. If you are interested in her biography as testament to the type of person Rep. Markey would choose to share his life you can find it at http://www.notablebiographies.com/newsmakers2/2007-A-Co/Blumenthal-Susan-J.html. I would say this is a couple of IMPECABLE academic worth and most importantly of humanitarian mind set. Dr. Blumenthal life to me is enviable for its academic and professional excellence! Dr. Blumenthal, can we interest you in a House seat for the 7th District if and HOPEFULLy when your husband wins the senate?
OMIG_here is the Warren worshiper hard at it again for another Democrat, or is it the 'ham sandwhich with a Democrat sign in front of it?
I have been living in Rep. Markey's district for 25 years, and I have never laid eyes on him. Now that he is running for the senate, maybe I can get to see what he looks like.
frank61 _ You say you haven't seen him? Rep. Markey lives in Washington!!!!
Markey makes no secret that his principal residence is in Washington. But for many years he listed his mothers house as his home-address, even when it was vacant, even after he got married, he still failed to identify his home address as, 'Washington.'
It is no secret that Washington is his 'home' now.
I know, who is he? And I was born and raised here.
In office since 1976? Age 66. Time to retire. Look around, the people who have been in power have guided us to our current position which is terrible. Expecting the same people who got us here to get us out is fool hardy!
same ole same ole
sigh...
Rep. Markey has what is called a 'free-run' at the potential vacant Senate seat! He collects his full salary during his senate campaign: he can return to his job in the House of Representatives, if he fails to win the Senate seat! Not a bad deal_eh?
Now_ the question of the day, "Will Patrick appoint Markey to the vacant Senate seat for the short term?" You can bet the Democrats are looking at the legal angles of whether or not this is viable.
it boggles the mind :-/
Oh Lord.
36 years in the House?
I'm a life long resident and I couldn't identify him in a lineup.
Just shows you how the voters in Massachusetts just check the box every time.
Poster child for term limits.
1976
If those quick to comment before me only checked Ed Markey's background they would not be so quick to pass along untruths; but rather as the man of integrity that he is.
