More political shame in Lawrence

A well-known city employee in Lawrence will find himself in a Massachusetts courtroom this morning. That development probably won’t register as a shock in the worst-run city in Massachusetts, the one overseen by the inimitable William Lantigua.

Sometime over the weekend Lantigua crony Jose Santiago, a former state representative and Methuen cop, was arrested for violating a restraining order taken out by his ex-girlfriend last week. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday morning in Lawrence District Court.

Lawrence has a different culture. It is located in Massachusetts but its really un like any other city. Its like the Wild Wild West. There are no rules and the shoot em up society is just the way it is. So its no wonder that the mayor is corrupt and surrounded by all his cronies, No other option would have any chance of survival. This will not change.

Good point. As bad as these things may seem to us, if you come from a culture where corruption is an accepted way of governing than why would you expect anything different when you come to the U.S. That's not to say that corruption doesn't exist in our government but when it's exposed the public takes exception to it.

When I think of all the ink the Globe has dedicated to disparaging Lt Gov. Tim Murray by deliberately turning a morning car accident on an ice covered road into some major thing, I have to laugh out loud when I read the periodic coverage of the crook Lantigua in Lawrence. If the Globe put the same effort they have dedicated into unjustly tarring Murray instead into helping expose Lantigua perhaps the feds, state and county prosecutors would be having an easier time nailing Lantigua. When Lantigua suspends corrupt officials WITH PAY who have been indicted by grand juries,he is really paying them tax funded hush money. If they were suspended WITHOUT PAY they would flip on Lantigua and his goose would FINALLY be cooked. The Globe has been focused on the wrong stuff in my opinion, while Lawrence is sinking slowly but surely into the corruption sink hole.

Maybe the Globe should devote more coverage to Lantigua but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be covering the Lieutenant Governor. The accident was just one thing that's been questionable during Murray's tenure. That said, Lantigua's a disgrace. If he get's re-elected it will be worse than when Marion Barry got re-elected in DC.

Lawrence has cemented it's standing as New Orleans on the Merrimack

A little late for the Globe to be complaining about the Lawrence mayor. Globe wanted to be sure national elections were over first.

Why would that be? I don't have any idea what party Lantigua belongs to, if he belongs to any party. Municipal elections in Massachusetts are non-partisan. And what does Lawrence have to do with National politics anyway? I think that's a pretty stupid comment.

I'm amazed at all the posters who have had their heads in the sand for the past two years -- Miker6, candlone, and others. The Globe has had continual stories documenting Lantigua's corruption and problems. That's why you know about it.

Lantigua has only been in office for 2 years, a very short time. He seemed like a decent person when he took office. Before you start condemning and belittling the citizens of Lawrence, I think waiting to see whether he's re-elected would be more appropriate. It's not like people like him have never been in office anywhere else in the country.

Of course, most of the ethnic bigotry here is from the usual suspects. Isn't it interesting that a particular person always brings up Wilkerson? But of course he's not racist. And that same person makes comments about Hispanic immigrants, illegal or not, and now condemns all of Central and South America. Disgusting.

Ahh, but you don't mention DiMasi or Finneran very often. You mention Wilkerson all the time, even though her offense was minor by comparison to DiMasi. You also made it obvious that you were insulting the immigrants in Lawrence, whether legal or illegal, and you also insulted all the nations south of the Rio Grande. Say that again? You're not racist? Hah.
