Roxbury man faces drug and gun charges after car stop

A Roxbury man with prior gun convictions is facing new charges after he was arrested with a loaded gun and a bag of suspected crack, officials said Thursday.

Silas Rankins, 20, was a passenger in a car that was stopped Wednesday on Howland Street in Dorchester, according to Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley. Police searched Rankins and said they discovered a bag containing what appeared to be crack cocaine, and a .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun loaded with five rounds of ammunition, and with its safety off, Wark said. The serial number on the gun had been defaced, according to Wark.
