Governor backs elimination of ‘master lever’

Rhode Island’s independent governor has joined a call to eliminate the so-called master lever, a ballot mechanism that allows citizens to cast a straight-party ballot with a single motion. The Providence Journal reported Wednesday that Governor Lincoln Chafee said that straight-ticket voting can confuse voters and that the time has come for Rhode Island to join most other states in ending the practice, now found in 17 states. Ken Block, the leader of Rhode Island’s Moderate Party, has called on state lawmakers to eliminate the master lever this year.
