A 12-inch water main burst in East Boston Friday night, damaging homes and displacing 17 to 20 people, the Boston Fire Department said. The main burst around 7:49 p.m. in the area of 300 Sumner Street, releasing water into the basements of six to eight three-decker buildings, said Steve MacDonald, a spokesman for the Fire Department. NStar cut electricity to 50 three-decker buildings in the area, and crews dug up the street to repair the broken main Friday night.

Correction: Because of a reporting error, an earlier version of this brief gave the wrong street for a water main break in East Boston. The break was on Sumner Street.
