N.H. police chiefs to hold gun raffle

The New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police plans to raffle off 31 firearms, including several semiautomatic weapons, in a fund-raiser for a youth training academy. The association said it is selling 1,000 tickets for $30 each to anyone 18 or older hoping to win ‘‘some of today’s most popular New Hampshire-made sporting firearms’’ during the May raffle. State Representative Sharon Nordgren said the raffle was insensitive after the school shootings in Newtown, Conn. Washington Police Chief Steven Marshall, who runs the New Hampshire Police Cadet Training Academy, said he understands some gun-control advocates may be uncomfortable with the raffle, but said the association is following the law and raising money for a good cause. The raffle was organized before the Newtown shootings.
