UMass student dies in apartment fire

A student at the University of Massachusetts has died in a fire at an apartment complex, according to an Amherst fire official. Assistant Chief Lindsay Stromgren declined to give the name or age of the male victim. State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said the fire was reported at the Rolling Green apartment complex about 4:45 a.m. Monday. Officials said the complex housed about 32 people, including 22 UMass students. The fire marshal’s office said UMass is working to find housing for the students. Coan said the fire appears to have started in the unit where the deceased student was discovered; the blaze was under investigation.

How horrible that a life was lost and so many are without a home! Were there any fire detectors? That particular apartment complex (like many others in Amherst) was a dump 25 years ago when I went to Umass.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it has changed much since then.  I have a family member who lives in another complex in Amherst which had rats running across the property from the overflowing dumpsters that had been sitting for days without being emptied.  Rents in Amherst are as expensive as Boston and landlords are taking advantage of college students.  Spend some of that rent money on improvements and safety for your tenants!
