Harvard cheating inquiry raises concerns

Last August, when Harvard administrators announced they were grappling with the largest Ivy League cheating scandal in recent memory, they said they would hear the cases of 125 students within a few weeks.

But instead of learning their fates in September, many of the accused and their families say they faced a series of delays and drifting deadlines as hearings continued through December.

Why don't I feel bad about some entitled brats getting caught cheating? Living in Harvard Square for years, I know of what I speak. Many feel that there are different rules for people of their "Class". You got caught cheating. Deal with it. You are not a Victim.

What are you talking about?  I admire most of the kids that get accepted to Harvard nowadays. One was a homeless teenager who lived in shelters.  I have a second cousin who went there based on his academic and personal outstanding performance and I know he is extremely honest and would never cheat and he came from a family which was not poor but could afford few luxuries.  Sure, there are some who get accepted because of family wealth, a promise of giant family donations and all of that, but I doubt that this is the case for most.  And look at the remarkable track record of so many graduates.  Outstanding contributors to the good, many of them.

I'm shocked that an elite and very expensive school like Harvard allows professors to teach classes where you don't even have to show up for the lectures.  I had some courses like that but I went to UMass Amherst (Food Science & Nutrition, shout out to Dr. Clydesdale!) Sounds like you're not getting much for your money other than a prestigious sheepskin and the ability to look down on the plebs for the rest of your life.

What a really ugly cheap shot at that professor.   Regardless of the merits of your feelings and complaints.

Do we really know whether Harvard "allowed" the professor to announce that there was no need to attend lectures or discussion sessions?

The students should claim they are Indians..... Harvard loves them some high-cheekboned Indians!

is there some perverse reason why racist comments such as this are regularly found in Globe comments ??  what crap

Having a base fair simple justice system that all students can understand works better than Harvard's system based on over 250 years of history.  Let's remember for the enxt time--all the tangled webs, indecisions and skulldugery that is Harvard. Maybe the whole system should be contracted out for weekend parttime work by professional, judges, investigators and lawyers.

Cant stop laughing:

"including multiple appearances of the number “22, 500” — with an errant space in the middle of the figure"

Please lefties, tell us again how smart Harvard students and teachers are...

What in the name of heaven does this have to do with "lefties"?

Hmm.  Kagen. Warren.  Obama.  Wicked big (yes, I'm a native) bolus of lefty harvard students and teachers  - who are currently destroying the nation.

There was a time when Harvard types joined the Army and fought for their country.  They now just tear it down.

One week for a "take home" exam? with published notes? with help from teaching assistants? for a class where attendance wasn't necessary? When I was in college, we did not have courses that met this description, but we did have a term for ones similar: guts.

This students seem pretty stoopit to me.

Harvard had a professor that lied and made $350 thousand per yr for teaching one course....and use affirmative action to get there and they wonder why some students may cheat....they are just following her example.
