Heavy hearts over closing of Cathedral Grammar School

When word came that Cathedral Grammar School in the South End would close at the end of the academic year, many children were devastated. Parents, while upset, are determined to continue their children’s Catholic education.

The Rev. Kevin O’Leary, rector at Cathedral of the Holy Cross, sent a letter to parents last week telling them that the century-old school that educates students from prekindergarten through sixth grade must shutter its doors because of declining enrollment caused by shifting demographics. By Friday, many parents, some traveling from as far away as Weymouth, already had ideas about where their children will attend school next fall.

Will Hizzhonor pump new blood into the heart of Boston to acquire this school building from the religious order for public school use, as he did for two pilot schools (Mission Hill elementary and New Mission High) 15 years ago)? How about relocating BPS Health Careers Academy grades 9 and 10  here with its proxmity to BMC & TMC and restoring the Farragut school building to its longstanding purpose as an elementary school on Mission Hill?Alternatively, what about a citywide magnet elementary school for the arts with  proxmity to SOWA visual art studios, theaters and the Community Music Center?Either way Boston could provide quality integrated education to families in quality deserts in Roxbury, not just downtowners in Back Bay who are pressing for a neighborhood school of their own?
