Broken bridge may reopen Monday

A lift bridge connecting Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery, Maine, that became stuck on Wednesday should be up and running on Monday, according to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, built in 1940, has “issues during the cold weather,” according to a transportation department official. While the bridge has been closed, and with Memorial Bridge (Route 1) shut down until July while it is being replaced, drivers have only been able to use the Interstate 95 bridge to get from one side of the Piscataqua River to the other. However, there are no alternate routes for marine traffic, and some vessels, including a few carrying heating oil, were blocked by the disabled bridge. However, workers were able to lift the bridge higher at 6:40 Saturday night, allowing boats to pass through. Officials said a replacement bridge is being planned.
