Science in Mind

Dogs eat more like humans than wolves

The bond between dog and man was forged at least 10,000 years ago; on that much, scientists can agree. But questions about precisely when and why dogs were domesticated remain unclear.

Did hunter-gatherers tiptoe into wolf dens, kidnap pups, and train them to guard and hunt? Or, was it a more opportunistic situation: Once people began to settle down and start farming and generating waste, did wolves learn to coexist peacefully with garbage dumps and the people that filled them with scraps?

But when it comes to eating manners, dogs and wolves are more refined than some humans.

My golden retriever is a big fan of 1) pizza crusts minus the toppings and 2) pasta sauce with lots of garlic.  In what is certainly another step for the darwinian excesses of modern life,  my aged and neutered male cat has adopted the dog's preferred leftovers for snacks, particularly if the pasta sauce has distinguishable cheese flavor.  Has this muddled the canine and feline brains in these two, like switching to omnivores from pure carnivores did to the wolf ?

Garlic can be harmful to dogs in large amounts, especially with small dogs, from what I have heard.

Onions and garlic are worse for cats.

"Onions, garlic, chives, and leeks are of the Allium family, and are poisonous to both dogs and cats. Garlic is considered to be about 5X as potent as onions."

Pizza sauce is made with a fair amount of onions and usually also has garlic.

I really think that people need to check out what is safe and what is not for a dog.  Some foods that are fine for us can be toxic to cats and dogs.   Pancreatitis is one result from feeding too much onion, or, especially, garlic (and both are very toxic for cats, very much so - I have always known that).
