Closure of Faulkner detox unit opposed

Kitty Dukakis says addicts need its help

Kitty Dukakis, the state’s former first lady who has spoken openly about her struggles with addiction and depression, has joined a grass-roots effort to stop Partners HealthCare from closing a 15-bed drug and alcohol detoxification unit at its Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston.

Many staff members and former patients say they are devastated by news that the unit that last year treated some 1,000 hospitalized patients is slated to close in mid-April, especially when they say the state has a shortage of inpatient detox beds.

As one in recovery from Alcoholism,I have mixed feelings about Partner's discision to close 7S. While Opiate Addiction is intensely uncomfortable, it can be handled using Suboxone on an outpatient basis if counseling is included. It is not fatal.  However the paucity of Inpatient beds is frightening. In it's it's advanced stages, recovery from alcohol addiction can be fatal. While realizing that the majority of those requesting De-Tox are opiate addicted, this leaves those detoxing from alcohol and/or benzodizipines, (i.e. Valium), in a near hopeless situation to find a bed for a multi-substance or medically complex detoxification. People will die.

Outpatient services is no substitute for a comprehensive in patient program. Some people will not get themselves to an outpatient program due to multiple problems affecting their lives in addition to addiction. Making it harder for people with multiple problems and dual diagnosis will not result in better service to this already underserved population. Notably Faulkner is not well-served by public transportation.

Penny wise, pound foolish.

7South dramatically impacted my recovery.  I learned more about what I needed for my recovery in three days there than in over two decades of doing it on my own.  No other (non-alcohol) medical experiences have been so comprehensive and succinct.  The program is top notch.  In three months I have heard dozens of people say the same.  it would be unconscionable to end or down-grade such a successful model.
