Senator John F. Kerry’s plan to submit his official letter of resignation Tuesday will set off a quick series of events this week that could define Massachusetts politics for years to come.
Kerry’s departure to become secretary of state, after a quarter-century in office, paves the way for Governor Deval Patrick to announce an interim senator Wednesday. Patrick has suggested he will choose a woman or a person of color to reflect the changing face of politics in Massachusetts.

Do you think Deville Deval will use a thoughtful state wide search to fill this important post, or will he as always pick some HACK Friend or Neighbor ??????
"Together We Can"
The strongest rumor I m aware of is Deval will name himself as the acting senator. Is there anything in the constitution of either the federal or state govrnments that forbids a governor to serve in another office... temporarily? After all, Deval needs a way out of this state fast, in case the House and Senate approve his tax schemes and his favorite two choochoos, even the one that ends at the Connecticut state line.
Deval cannot appoint himself but can do effectively the same thing by stepping down as Governor and having the Lieutenant Governor become Governor and appoint Deval as temporary Senator and then Deval can mount a campaign for the new election in November, obviously with hopes of being elected to a full term.
It better not be Victoria Kennedy and it rankles me that she is even in the conversation. She spent most of her life somewhere else and happened to be married to Senator Kennedy and she is supposed to be qualified to be our senator? Oh, wait a minute - Deval Patrick and Elizabeth Warren are from somewhere else so maybe carpetbagging is becoming the norm in Massachusetts politics.
Right, but you'd love it if it was the dancing horse's partner, who's no carpetbagger at all. Transparent.
I thought we sent Scooter Brown a strong message in November. Apperently he isn't bright enough to understand. That makes him just too plain stupid to be senator.
I assume most of the fake democratic votes in urban areas and the phony absentee ballots won't be around this time so he'll likely win.
Deval will do what's in the best interest of......Deval.
I hope Mr. Lynch runs and that he and Mr. Markey have a spirited but civil debate. Campaign muscles need toning. I also hope that the Governor appoints Mr. Frank because his muscles are well toned...his political ones, at least...and he would bring vast and important knowledge to Senate debates. But my hopes have been frustrated before.
From the article, "Patrick has suggested he will choose a woman or a person of color to reflect the changing face of politics in Massachusetts."
How about selecting a person who's best qualified for the job?
And speaking of qualifications, anyone who's spent 36 years in the House should be returning to the private sector, not moving to the Senate. I'm talking about you, Ed.
Let's pick a Dem to support harry:
