Man, 19, charged with the abuse of infant, mother

A 19-year-old Roxbury man pleaded not guilty Monday in South Boston District Court to charges of assault and battery on an infant and the child’s mother, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said. According to prosecutors, Steven Velasquez squeezed the 2-month-old boy hard enough to break his rib and left two bite marks on his right arm and a third on his left leg. The boy’s mother, a 21-year-old South Boston woman, told police that three weeks earlier Velasquez had punched her in the face twice, prosecutors said. Velasquez is due back in court Feb. 19.
