Rep. Stephen Lynch to declare run for Senate

Entry a challenge to Democratic establishment

US Representative Stephen F. Lynch has reserved the union hall of Iron Workers Local 7 in South Boston for a Thursday afternoon announcement that he is running for the Democratic nomination in the special election to fill John F. Kerry’s seat, a person with direct knowledge of the congressman’s decision said Tuesday.

That person said Lynch has reserved the Local 7 hall on Old Colony Avenue for an afternoon event.

Well, the IQ level of candidates in this race has suddenly dropped off a cliff.

It is finally matching the intelligence level of the sheepish voters of the Commonwealth.

STEVE LYNCH IS A SOUTHERN DEMOCRAT IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

Ugh. No contest. Markey it is.  Lynch is just going to waste time, energy, and money that we could better spend on the general election.

Heaven forbid Democrats let the people decide who will represent them.

Anyone (Democrat or Republican) who's spent 36 years sucking on the public teat (that's you, Eddie) should be returning to the private sector, not seeking election to the Senate.

Glad there will be a choice to make.

Stephen Lynch is NOT a choice!

@7continents: Lynch is not a choice for YOU. Fair enough. Lynch seems a lot less inclined to kiss Senatorial a**. I like that, and will probably support him with my vote.

A really poor decision. Unfortunateley his votes make him compleley out of step with commited and real Democrats in MA and he will loose by a lopsided margin. A lynch campaign is a sideshow and a real $ and time waster for Democrats.

So much for the idea that the Democratic party is a big tent.

I find a Socially Conservative Democrat refreshing. Not all Dems. are knee jerk progressives. I think a Warren-Lynch Team would be very healthy for a politically inbred Commonwealth.

The problem with Lynch is that nobody outside of South Boston trusts him.  Running for this seat is a waste of his time, but it will allow the voters to feel engaged in the choice of Markey, which should then translate into beating any republican stupid enough to throw away his career for this election.

Here's a fantasy...a conservative and a liberal Democrat have a primary contest in which they lay out to the voters the shadings of difference between them.  Mr. Lynch comes from a working class background (as I do) and has core values can be expressed cleanly, clearly and persuasively.  I hope he does so.  We do not need insults and scorched earth tactics aimed at anyone and certainly not within the party that respects and truly cares for the average person.  The factory worker and the care giver, the guys that cut your lawn and the businessman working to provide goods and services efficiently and humanely are all worthy of respect and consideration.  Don't go down the Karl Rove path.  It doesn't lead to anywhere good.

Mr. Lynch has virtually no support outside of Southie.

Au contraire. He has Labor's support.

But Steve, don't you realize that Granny and Liveshot have reserved the seat for Eddie?

Spoken like a true Howie worshiper.

@ pvalen: Indeed.

While he may not be the ideal candidate he matches up far better against ex. Sen. Senterfold than Markey does.  He brings trumps Scottzo's barncoat and pickup with actual real guy cred having been an iron worker.   And it's not like Markey's pursuit of headlines has translated into name recognition outside of 128.  Lynch goes in with the hardcore democrats lined up and takes back the "independent" working man vote .  The math works much better with Lynch on the ballot.

You speak the truth, kemo-sabe. I agree Lynch is not a perfect candidate, but niether is Markey. I'd rather vote for a guy that spends a little less time diggin' himself. Lynch shows up. He's not a sweet talker, and being an former Union Pres., he's not afraid of bare knuckle politics. I'm for Steve Lynch.

If you are a voter in his district, you might as well not have a representative.  He is, no matter how long the recess or how willing you are to accommodate his schedule, "busy with important matters when he's in Boston" according to his office receptionist's borderline insult-toned response.  If you are standing next to him at an event, obviously awaiting the chance to speak to him after the person he's talking to has finished, he will ignore you and walk away.  That's my experience having never given him offense.  If you try email you will learn that his office doesn't use it well; by telephone you will get an assistant who will relay your concern and then you will hear no more.

Surely there are people who can at least address him but I am not one after four years of trying.

I've had much better luck with Kerry and Brown.  Lynch is not someone I think can speak for me.

Steve Lynch is a Southern Democrat if you know what I mean.

Lynch voted against the Affordable Care Act, the most important Democratic bill in a generation, showboating and siding with the GOP in a twisted attempt to steal defeat from the jaws of victory.  Now he's trying to cover it up with a laughable cover story that the reforms didn't go far enough, despite the reforms being virtually identical to the system we have here in his own home state.

Stephen Lynch is the wrong person to represent Massachusetts in the Senate.
