Cowan pick is 100 percent Patrick

Appointing Mo Cowan interim US senator is such a Deval Patrick thing to do.

The governor loves to ignore conventional wisdom. And he likes to start uncomfortable conversations. And so he chose someone with a low profile, a trusted aide — a crony, critics will doubtless say — who also happens to be African-American.

It really is too bad Deeval the Deville didn't appoint himself to the Kerry seat. . . Yeah, bad form... But the benefits would have easily overwhelmed the bad form... We would have been rid of Deeval in just five months instead of 22 more months... And that would have made having to call that gubernatorial misfit 'senator' absolutely worthwhile....

Yup, sure is 100% Deval. 100% I do whatever I want. 100% up yours to the state. 100% jerk.

Let me get this straight, a "staff member" is now our State Senator? You mean the guy who used to pick up pizza for all of the meetings is now our state senator? I was actually expecting Deval patrick to pick an illegal alien, so this pick is reather refreshing.

Excuse me!!! dja65 United States Senator..thank you very much, Further,  Senator Cowen is probably one of the most respected attorneys in the country. For you to refer to him as the pizza guy is understandable since you don't know the difference between a State Senator and a United States Senator.

Which country would that be?

I'm not a Patrick critic, but Cowen is, by definition, a crony.

How come all these commentary poobahs, such as elvis03, can't figure out how to spell the new senator's surname correctly?  I mean, really . . . Is there some sort of play on spelling involved in the use of an 'e' instead of a correct 'a' in the new senator's last name, Cowan?  I think his appointment is a political fiasco, but not deserving of that sort of disrespect.

Nice to know that Beacon Hill remains a meritocracy - what? He couldn't find Joey Chitwood Murray in the early AM when he made the call? Oh yeah... he probably wasn't "strongly encouraged to apply," as the ads say.

And the Republicans are all so above the sucking up to their political constituencies.  Governor Jindal, a Brown University Biology Major, put forth a creationist science curriculum for Biology Classes in Louisiana's Public Schools.  And then has the gall to say, "We Republicans have to stop being the Party of Stupid."  No legitimate College or University in this country teaches creationism in its Biology Classes except probably as an historical footnote.  Just saying it doesn't make it so.  Actions, Governor Jindal. actions, not words!  Hey, can't tell those fundamentalist religious zealots who vote Republican to come into the real world of science in the 21st Century.

This does strike me as a crony pick - his buddy - shares his story about hard times etc etc.  OTOH- our new senator is a very well educated and intelligent fellow.  Too bad he has only 5 months to get use to the new job - and that, in my opinion, it the problem.  The appointment should have been about putting someone in place who understands the system, has the respect of many in the senate and can well represent the needs of the commonwealth until a new senator is selected.  Now our senior senator is a newcomer to the senate - yes she will get up to speed quickly, but our junior senator is a total newby - no seniority at all, and 5 months does not buy any thing.  After that - who knows - will Scotty be back - personally I hope not, but whom ever is elected will have no seniority at all either.  The best interests of the commonwealth in the Senate have been seriously eroded by the Governor's desire to reward his buddy.

Ms. Abraham, why is it an "appalling fact that in 2013 there are no elected black US senators."  If African Americans do not 'run' for senator, then they cannot be 'elected.'  Further, why is it a conversation "WE" must have.  Sorry, I think your commentary is way off base.  Further, I think this is a dreadful selection for the US Senate.  Aside from the fact that nobody in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts knows anything about him; there are even fewer people in Washington, DC who have a clue who the new senator is - where Mr. Cowan will be working.

What a powerful senate team from MA - Warren - on the job for a month; and now Cowan!!
