Providence hotel occupancy was up last year and beat both the national and New England occupancy averages. The Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau said Thursday that the average occupancy in the capital in 2012 was 68 percent, up 3 percent from 2011. The bureau said the national average is 61 percent. In New England, it is 62 percent. City officials said Providence has been successful in attracting large conventions and events, including the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority’s regional conference, which brought 2,500 people to the city.
