Scott Brown, who burst onto the national scene as a political celebrity with his upset victory in 2010, upended the special US Senate election with an announcement Friday that he will not run to replace John F. Kerry.
Brown’s abrupt decision, while not surprising to some GOP insiders who knew he was wavering, stunned the rest of the political world and delivered a major blow to Republican Party leaders who saw in him their best chance to win the June 25 election. It came with little warning to national or state leaders, who had been pleading with Brown to run, and caused a furor within state party ranks.

In the Pow Wow Chow cookbook were recipes allegedly authored by Warren.
Ms. Warren’s 1984 recipe for Crab with Tomato Mayonnaise Dressing is a word-for-word copy of Mr. Franey’s (Pierre Franey of the New York Times) 1979 recipe.
Mrs. Warren’s 1984 recipe for Cold Omelets with Crab Meat contains all four of the ingredients listed in Mr. Franey’s 1979 recipe in the exact same portion but lists five additional ingredients. More significantly, her instructions are virtually a word for word copy of Mr. Franey’s instructions from this 1979 article. Both instructions specify the use of a “seven inch Teflon pan.” …
There's one fly in his ointment-- the Koch Brothers & Karl Rove won't be pouring millions into a gubernatorial election. They have nothing to gain from Brown winning in MA, everything to gain were he to win a Senate seat.
Takes a bit of the sales pitch away from Lynch. Especially if Tisei throws his hat in the ring.
Never a dull moment in MA politics. Just dull people.
You're contradicting yourself. Dull people create dull moments.
I disagree with you, John. You may characterize yourself as "dull". I have no opinion on that point. But I find Mass politicians and voters to be anything but dull.
Proud of Massachusetts!
If he became exhausted by running, I guess that it's good that he didn't win.
The ignorance of your statement is staggering. If you had any clue what running for public office involved, you might think twice about denigrating someone who had the selflessness to run.

Weld or Healy would be good...plain and simple, but I'd still rather someone like Richie Neal from Western Mass!
Weld was fine. Healy would be an incompetent disaster. The governorship is an administrative position and she's never shown any aptitude for that.
Boston Globe CHEERS.

Great news for a Friday afternoon!!
Scott Brown will be the next governor. Interesting that we had 16 years of Republican rule after the distruction of M Dukakis and the rest of the democrats.
Wrong!
L'il scotty governor of our state? I HOPE NOT. I want to retire this brownmustgo monicker....but, only if this poseur is as far as I can see in my rear view mirror. Cash in your short lived fame scotty in some law firm.....call uncle mitch
Thanks, Senator Brown. You've made my day.
The Koch Brothers and Scott can stand at Armageddon and battle or the Lord. not.
This is what I hoped. I could never have considered voting for Brown as Senator because that would just fueled the intransigence of Washington (National) Republicans.
Massachusetts Republicans tend to be more moderate and sensible about government. I could certainly give Brown a fair hearing and possibly my vote for Governor.
Since I don't know who will be running for Governor, it's a little early to be committing myself, but apparently a goodly number of people are already coming down on one side or the other. What do you call that? Ignorance, maybe? Or stupidity?
Since you who cares seems rataional never give a Republican your vote. Times have changed. It means something utterly different between Republicans and Democrates. The lines are drawn. If you would not vote for him as Senator you should defifnitely NOT vote for him as Governor. Take a look at Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Florida governors and see the how they kick the teeth out of a state. Austerirty during a recession does NOT work. It pulls TONS of jobs out of the state incluidng police, fire and teachers. My cousin in Florida who is a public school nurse just said and I quote "Rick Scott is killing us." Do NOT let a Republican anything do that you to you! Food for thought.
very, very good insight nrosen....this political party has morphed so much over the past decades that those republicans like my personal hero, Silvio Conte must be in complete disbelief and agitation wherever they are.
always remember....this modern day tea/republican party's mantra is "party first, country second"

Senator Brown way or may not run. He is pulling a Hamlet because no matter how close the polls, he will lose and that does not look good on a resume. If he had any gravitas in the Senate he'd still be there. Senator McConnell sized him up upon his arrival and analyzed that there was no deep thinking or understanding there. Senator Brown was never put front and center after that first meeting. By doing that the Republican Party told us what they thought of Senator Brown.
My post on above date. I'm not always right but pleased I called this one. Same analysis applies to his decision today. Politics in Massachusetts is the 5th competitive team sport.
Great post, Scratchcook! I believe Uncle Mitch has the power to bring Hostess Twinkees back to life.
6th competitive team sport, no offense to the Revolution.
I must say the announcement MADE MY DAY!!!! BUT upon reflection, sure, so soon for Brown to lose would end his political career such as it was but a run for governor OR another run for the full six year term is possible. SO I SAY LOUD AND CLEAR...Scott Brown you will NOT be elected for governor, nor for the six year senate term or anything else short of dog catcher.
Here's the deal, the Martha Coakley debacle was a very very very necessary learning experience for progressives and Democrats as she clearly was the favorite BUT we AND she took it for granted. THAT MUST NEVER EVER EVER happen again and it won't. We MUST work hard for every vote and I have been privilged to see the Democratic machine become organized as it did for the great Elizabeth Warren and the president. We as progresives and STRONG Democrats know that if you do not pay attention you get a Scott Brown who WILL vote with Republicans 70% of the time, vote against women, vote against choice, vote against equal pay for equal work, and WILL vote with big money every time.
Economically Republicans are NOT about most of you, they are NOT even about Tea Baggers who were utterly DUPED. They are about the top 1% and there is NO SUCH THING AS TRICKLE DOWN economics. It's fantasy. It's trickle down alright right into the pants pocket of the big banks, politicians like Brown or anything else corporate. Brown was a shill for the banking industry and for the real estate madness of liar's loans precipitating the Great Recession. THEY CANNOT kid us again. We the Democratic machine, of which I am proud to be a part, WILL NEVER EVER EVER let what happened to Martha Coakley happen again.
Lynch will be out primaried by Markey and Markey will be our next senator sitting appropriately beside the excellent Senator Warren. It is exactly correct that that should happen. He is a lion on climate change, he is strong on positions regarding choice, he is a progressive's progressive. I will cast my vote GLADLY and PROUDLY for the next Senator from the fantasticly blue state of Massachusetts!! Long may it be so in every way.
I had high hopes for Scott Brown when he got in. But, he proved to be just another "go along to get along" schlub. Voting with the usual suspects for right wing agenda issues, special interest big money, large corporate fat cat issues. To be fair; he did buck the party a few times. But mostly toed the party line. So, this is no big loss as far as I'm concerned.
As a famous Republican once said, a man's got to know his limitations!
found it amusing that l'il scotty opted to tell a reporter from the herald about his decision....figures, the herald where pictures take the place of reading. That's how I will "fondly" remember our boy, former ex-senator...."reading" the herald.
I want to hear the story of how Scott abused you when you were a little boy. He did, didn't her? Otherwise, why the infantile comments?
what would you like to hear mr salacious, out of touch poster....? that like a boy in awe of his peers the boy senator did not even pause at GO before running to mcconnel and his ilk. L'il scotty forgot who he was representing....his state and country or the political party he belonged to...
Why am I responding to someone who appears....and probably is projecting his or her fantasy? Because stupid people with their stupid replies should be responded to. Anyone worth their salt can clearly see that l'il scotty was in over his head representing our state in the Senate. He truly was a boy amongst men and was the last person to recognize it....right up to his concession speech to Elizabeth Warren.
As for that story about l'il scotty abusing me.....would love to accommodate your drooling....unlike you or the boy.....I went through my baptism in Vietnam....being abused because of that is old hat....however in closing I would like to say (personally).....go fongool yourself....punk
Even in his political death, Scott Brown stayed partisan to the last, telling the Herald first.
Late October, the Globe printed Sally Jacobs "TOTAL HATCHET JOB" ( NECN / Cambridge Jim Braude's description )
http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2012/10/23/scott-brown-modeling-years/XC72G6LasScChK7cDbOkOL/story.html
and the next day, published a total puff piece on Warren.
Not too mention the Globe being the one to give front page coverage to the Geneologist's claim to substantiate Warren's being 1/32 Cherokee, then burying the retraction. Most Globe readers STILL think that there is some proof of Native American Heritage for her, when in fact there is ZERO.
The partisan party here is the Globe.
Enjoy the high taxes and the lack of service from your union "professionals." As if your own Boston Globes doesn't report the indiscretions of your own pompous party. Loved the days of Dukakis? That was a sham...Was the Big Dig progressive enough for you? Not only did we overpay then, deal with unions stealing, but we continue to do so due to shoddy union work. Now we're going to be taxed to death to improve transportation and education? Haven't we been trying that for the past generation? I really love the progress that you democrats show as 5 of your house speakers end up in prison. And you blindly keep pulling the "D" lever time and again and don't ask questions. That's just idiocy, hypocrisy and blind faith. Three things that you accuse republicans of representing.

I think you'll find it was the _contractors_, that is the profit-making private enterprise, that lead to huge cost overruns at the big dig. It was not union labor, but profiteering, that drove the costs up.
Not a political beast. nice to see. was a good rep and if he had more time I think he would have been one of the more moderate voices on CH
The Massachusetts voters are an embarrassment and disgrace. They vote out Brown, one of our best Senators in decades. Our brilliant Massachusetts voters would rather keep re-electing people like Barney Frank; who ruined our economy, Ted Kennedy; who got away with murder and spent most of his life as a drunk and womanizer, and John Kerry; tax cheat until he got caught sailing his $11 million yacht and docking it in Martha's Vineyard ans Nantucket. Kerry has been an empty suit that did nothing for Massachusetts. BTW, the yacht was foreign-built...a slap in the face to the USA.
you sound (and write) like a real beacon as evidenced by tour first two sentences...dissing your own Mass. citizens and declaring an individual as one of the states best senators....my first and last thought before writing this is that you must be a frequent user of the Cape Cod tunnel which is enuff said here...
Brown isn't running because he knows he would lose. Again. Elizabeth Warren is one thing, but can you imagine the humiliation of being beaten by Ed Markey?
...humiliation of being beaten by Markey? Only in your pea sized cabeza my friend....
Hey! Why doesn't Mitt Romney run? Isn't he still a Massachusetts citizen?
Damn! Scott has to go back to being akept man (boy?)
