Three more high-profile Republicans announced in rapid succession Monday that they will not be candidates in the special US Senate election, leaving the GOP with the prospect of fielding a relative unknown in what the party had hoped would be a pitched battle for John F. Kerry’s former seat.
Just three years after Republicans triumphed in Scott Brown’s unlikely victory to replace the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the only GOP candidate actively exploring a campaign is Gabriel E. Gomez, a 47-year old Cohasset businessman whose only electoral experience is a failed bid for town selectman.

Winslow is my rep, but I couldn't tell you what he looked like until I saw his photo here - thanks for that.
Looks like a police lineup to me. Maybe thats the GOPs issue.
It is a police lineup, but we know the elite get off the hook. We just got rid of insufferable Mitt once and for all, now we may have to contend with Tagg, the prep school ruffian, getting into politics at some point? Bring it on, we'll be swift and merciful.
Perhaps the right wing posters here could acknowledge there is a chicken and egg problem for the Republican party in Massachusetts. If its strongest potential candidates refuse to run, who will vote for them?
It seems to me the notion of having a special election was hastily conceived and executed. The serious candidates will wait for 2014.
Yes, why should the hapless Republicans run and lose now when they can run and lose in 2014?
There's also the matter of having only about a year in office before needing to campaign again. I would not assume a Democratic re-election in 2014. If you look at the popular votes from 2012 it was a clear majority for Warren but not a landslide. Then again, I am not 'invested' as to which party wins. All I care about is that a sitting Senator or challenger put good government above all else. From the comments of others on BostonGlobe.com maybe I just haven't lived in MA long enough.
The Globe is desperate for a GOP punching bag. Otherwise, there is little to write about because they certainly don't want to tell us the truth about Markey's 20+ pathetic record in telecommunications.
The U.S has the highest rates, poorest service and Markey did nothing to improve the situation.
Lynch_has done nothing_will do nothing_end of his story.
I'm very sorry to read that Kerry Healey is not a candidate for the US Senate. She has strong understanding of the issues of the Commonwealth, state-wide credentials, dignity, intelligence, humor and is articulate and constructive - a positive presence. She would represent Massachusetts very well, and add a lot to the national debate. Senator Bruce Tarr would be next on my list ....he's positive, optimistic, constructive, practical, and knows a lot about the Massachusetts economy, including our critical maritime and fishing issues.
OK, you're kidding, right? Is that really the best you've got?
Weld COULD have given the Dems a run for their money, but I personally would have liked to see Richie Neal of Western Mass go for it! Western mass is always ignored.
If Adolph Hitler were running for the Senate as a Democrat and Winston Churchill were running as a Republican, Hitler would win a Senate race in Massachusetts.
