Rep. Stephen Lynch changes tone on abortion rights

US Representative Stephen F. Lynch, who has consistently described himself as an antiabortion legislator, said Monday that he believes abortion is a constitutionally protected right and that as a US senator he would actively oppose antiabortion nominees to the Supreme Court.

While Lynch insisted his views have not shifted, his rhetoric is coming closer to that of his Democratic rival for the Senate nomination, Edward J. Markey, a congressman who has long supported legalized abortion. Lynch’s new emphasis and arguments come just days after he entered the heated primary in which liberal voters who support abortion rights exert a large influence.

Comments

Mr Lynch will have some problems here, markey will use this against him. Another election about social issues, guess that means our fiscal situation is fantastic, the "War on Women" continue. I guess it worked for the presidential election, might as well keep it going.

Replies

He'll use "legal, safe and rare" against him?

actually most of the people who voted for Obama did so because they thought he and the Dems would  be/are more fair when it comes to economics and taxes. Social issues were always secondary in all the polls I saw, with the Repugs, of course, being on the wrong side of them, as well.

Lynch = shape-shifting phony

Didn't Kennedy EVOLVE on abortion?

Nope. Kennedy was mildly anti-abortion until the Supreme Court's Roe vs. Wade ruling. Thereafter, he was pro-choice. There was no "evolving." Apparently the Supreme Court arguments and ruling changed his mind, but it pitted him against the hierarchy of his church. The church was important to him throughout his life, so why not give him credit for some courage?

Good career move.  Worked for Ted Kennedy anyway.

hey. hey cut it out.. No bad mouthing Teddie in the left wing section of the Globe is allowed..

And in the left corner..... Steve "Baby killa" lynch....

I'm prochoice....but then I'm not a catholic and never professed my pro-choice beliefs.

But, like all of todays liberals....he doesn't stand for anything....

Replies

Speak only for yourself and where you stand.  Liberals do stand for many progressive ideas but then you wouldn't understand them.

Forget Lynch.  He will have to backpeddle on nearly everything that got him elected in Southie.

It'll be the proverbial cold day in hell befoe I vote for Lynch. He's just shifting his words now, to get elected. Markey's position has been consistent. Markey will have my vote.

Replies

Markey has been consistent...consistently horrible.

Not matter how tightly I hold my nose, I couldn't cast a vote for either of these jamokes...

"Markey has been consistent...consistently horrible."

And you are consistently deranged.

NEVER EVER EVER trust those with "conservative" especially social views when they SAY they

changed them.  THEY HAVE NOT.  DO NOT BE DUPED like many of the Tea Baggers are.  THESE so called

change of heart "conservatives" HAVE NO SUCH THING.  Lynch SHOULD be STUCK with the albatross of NOT

for choice hanging around his neck.  DO NOT think for one second that these Trojan Horses are not who they are.  They are anti choice, anti woman and want to control not only women but EVERYONE'S private personal life.  Lynch is NO different because he has a (D) after his name.  He may as well have an (R).

Most especially women and LBGT community Stephen Lynch is NOT about any of you.  He wants to take those personal decisions and allow the big government they SAY they hate to STOP you from what you want to do with your own body or stop the choice of whom you want to marry.  David Lynch is a SHAM.  DO NOT BE FOOLED!  He may be okay for his district but to run in the entire state for the prestigious US Senate NO he must NOT be allowed to do that.

Moreover Markey has DECADES of experience in Congress.  The choice is CLEAR as day.  Ed Markey will be a GREAT senator for we with people of Masachusetts.  I cannot wait like I could not wait for Elizabeth Warren to the time when I could address them as Senator.  Senator Markey, sounds great.  YOU WILL be the next senator from our wonderful blue state of Massachusetts.  I utterly LOVE this state and am so proud to be from it for my entire life!

Wiggle Wiggle, Wiggle Wiggle..  The prospect of a senate seat can certainly shape shift his uncompromising "pro life'  screed into a tortured half baked pretzel.  No inconsistancies in Mr. Lynch meeting himself in the hallway going the other way.  Send this guy back to whoever will have him.

Very nice word play! I like the hallway meeting.

OK, think I have seen it all ... a Right to Lifer who supports Roe v Wade.

Caught, in mid-air, between flip and flop.  Just shows that a politician will do ANYTHING to become more powerful.  All the "pro-lifers" ought to be proud of their "union" guy ...  and yes, he is the twin of Ray Flynn as well as a descendent of  Al Smith ... a Democrat on the outside and a genuine, knuckledragging caveman on the inside.  This should be a fun, too brief, campaign.

What do you think the NARAL woman talks about over dinner?

"We had a tough one today....one came out alive ..."

To think that the liberals spat on soliders and call them "baby killers", and those very same people joyously slaughter millions in the womb.

Again, I am pro-choice, but it should be a sad, last-option choice, not something to be celebrated as the degenerates do...

@Thecpt: The year is 2013.  I doubt very much that "the NARAL woman"  was tall enough to spit on soldiers in 1978.  She was probably still in kindergarten, if even that old.

And, although nuance seems to be beyond you, please remember that NARAL is an organization that fights politically to keep women free to choose for themselves.  It does not advocate abortion: it advocates the rights of individuals to make choices for themselves.  Why do you think the government has the right to dictate morality?  Most Americans think that abortion should be legal, at least in "certain circumstances."  Who should be in charge of determining those circumstances?  The only possibile person who should have final say is the woman who will bear the responsibilities that come with the decision.

Lynch is a lying sack of excrement

While I am not inclined to vote for the man, do you think you could be more specific?  Do comments that that really do anything to further the conversation?

Your comment is more obnoxious than Lynch's flip flopping, and doesn't say much about your intellectual abilities either.

it should be everyones opinion. Unfortunately, the left is run by radicals like Obama who believe any abortion if fine.

Replies

You've no clue as to what a radical is.

LOL. really? partial birth abortion? Please tell me you view of how the right is sooo "radical"

Lynch has just made his uphill fight a little steeper.

What gets him votes in Southie won't fly state wide.

Color him gone.

It looks like Representative Lynch has got a copy of the Mitt Romney Playbook.  One position reversed, 100 to go, for anyone keeping score.  Funny, usually news like that is released Olathe on a Friday afternoon.  I guess he's saving the "really big" flip flops for later...on a Friday afternoon.  His kaleidoscopic Healthcare and Stymulus votes didn't fool anyone outside of South Boston.  At least now I get to vote against Mr. Lynch.

"He said he believes abortion should be legal, but rare"

I feel the same way about steak.

I'm not seeing this as a big change based on his voting record and history of support from NARAL and

lack of support from Right to Life.   Safe, legal and rare, how much more reasonable can you get?

I make it my policy on this site, and others, that I do not write an ad hominem response.  I try to keep the comment(s) addressing the issue at hand. For the name calling and personal attacks I recently decided to pass by them.  In my opinion they add very little or nothing to a good discussion or debate.  I'm old enough to remember the debates between Bill Buckley and John Kenneth Galbraith, conservative and liberal positions respectively.  They were in depth civil discourses on very serious issues of the time.  Bill Buckley's Firing Line for the most was intense in debate but civil in discourse between the various guests. Ok, it could get testy, to put it mildly, between Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer vs. Buckley. But I use that predominately civil interaction as my personal guideline for written counter points in my posts and discussions with my friends and acquaintances. I can slip but try very seriously to stay on track.  Not preaching just presenting my way of approaching the Comment Section generously offered by The Boston Globe and osites news sites.  The insult is the lowest common denominator in any debate.  One can be fiery with words that support one's differing viewpoint on the issue not a demonizing zinger about the other person.  And it occurs from both liberal and conservative sides.  Thanks for reading this far and have a great next debate.

I always keep my comments to the issue at hand. (  a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with the issue at hand )

I'm kidding!  Good post!

Too much vitriol in our country, too much bigotry. If someone disagrees with someone's point of view, left or right, they get eviscerated and of course the personal attacks, pretty sad. Wish both Congressman Lynch and Congressman Markey the best, they both seem like decent men who will serve our Commonwealth well. There's no future for us in hate zone.

Ah, Stephen Lynch.  Who "evolves" whichever way the political wind blows.  As he has since he first ran for political office.  Flip-flop.  Etch-A-Sketch.  Riding the tide.  However, w/ more expansive and varied voters in this upcoming U.S. Senate race than his peers in Southie, he cannot be a chameleon.  Nor can he merely wave his union card to the cameras as he has been prone to do over the years.  And certainly Massachusetts does not want a politician in Washington who cannot or will not separate his or her religion from matters of government as Stephen Lynch has demonstrated (and stated) over the years.

Mitt Lynch.
