Storm preparations make for a difficult commute

“Traffic is just terrible tonight,” state trooper Thomas Murphy said Thursday.

The evening commute paired with people making last-minute storm preparations led to gridlock on many highways, particularly Interstate 93 and its surrounding roadways, according to Murphy.

Two people were ejected in a single-car rollover on I-93 in Methuen at 4:30 p.m., he said. The victims were taken by medical helicopter to a local hospital and northbound lanes were temporarily closed, according to Murphy. The closure increased congestion on alternative routes on the North Shore.

State Police also responded to accidents on Route 1 in Saugus and I-93 and I-495 in Andover around 5 p.m.

Murphy expects conditions to improve as the night progresses.
