A window into Whitey’s brutal life and mind

New biography traces Bulger’s rise, reign, and the reckoning ahead

As he sits brooding in his drab cell awaiting trial, South Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger is telling friends that while he feels tortured by his cramped captivity, with its isolation, strip searches, and dismal food, he is ready and eager for “the big show” — the trial where he will defend his sense of honor if not exactly his innocence.

But however defiant he remains, Bulger was prepared to give prosecutors an easy way out, saying he offered himself up for execution if the government would let the woman he loves walk free.

Great PR piece. Does Billy deserve a writing credit? Did the White Rat have editorial control. I felt dirty after reading that, i hope you felt used.

The article says the Globe provided editorial support for the book, so of course they are going to be supportive of its release.

No problem with them supporting the book. A problem with them glorifing and supporting the murderer.

Looking forward to buying a book. And glad that both authors are back to their day jobs.

You could have at least sprung for the chump change to use a heavy edited freelancer to muddy this shameless, self promoting traveling circus....What would Marty Baron say?

It's bad enough when a book reviewer who is a friend of the author writes a slavishly sycophantic review of the friend's book. But even lower are the journalistic standards that permit the authors themselves to write their own puff piece, in the form of an article "reporting" on the book. Just when you thought the Globe couldn't descend any lower ....
