Region scrambles to resume its routines today

The region began digging out from a historic storm under a bright-blue sky Sunday, as crews worked to clear roadways and restore power to the thousands of homes still without it. But the real test could come Monday as people return to workweek routines.

Side streets throughout Boston and surrounding communities remained snow-covered and choked off by plows trying to clear major streets. Many schools were closed Monday, and the day’s weather could bring another twist. Rain could weigh down the already-heavy snow and cause local flooding where drains are blocked.

Frankly, this was an excellent example of governing, telling people ahead of time things they may not want to hear and helping to stave off a disaster that could have been a lot worse. People do stupid things, but this prevented a lot more of them. Let's thank Governor Patrick for declaring a 4pm emergency. It made a lot of companies consider a pre-emptive response. Even his asking us to clean off the roofs was excellent advice.

Mayor Menino did a great job too, but being from the South Shore I just stayed put until we got power back last night. I'm so glad I did.

There will be lots of criticisms, but here's one small voice in praise of good government.
