A playful solution

Occasionally, the solutions to some of education’s most ­bedeviling problems are startlingly simple.

Here is one of them, on a playground at the Mather Elementary School in Dorchester on a recent, frigid afternoon. It’s your typical no-frills public school playground, only colder: Every gust goes through you like an icy shiv.

Thanks for this timely article. Sadly, one of the "frills" too often cut is Physical Education. That's one reason (along with video games) our kids are becoming obese. Four Square and Kick Ball that's what we need - not only at recess - but after school in playgrounds and kids' clubs. Where have these programs gone? In the old days, towns & cities understood the importance of youth activities. Not so much any more, and we're paying for it.

What's next, midnight basketball?
